In their previous two seasons, the Bruins were a perfect 4-0 against the Screaming Eagles. Toccoa Falls College was looking to rewrite history as they two teams took the court in Georgia.Â
The Bruins struggled out of the gate to score as the Screaming Eagles jumped out to an early lead. The turnover disease infected the Bruins again in this game as the team couldn't seem to keep possession. Despite their struggles, the Bruins kept pace with the Eagles and fought their way back into the game. The defense of BJU was strong in limiting opportunities for Toccoa Falls College. Bruins' forward Kourtney Hoefler stepped up in the post and helped to secure defensive rebounds for the team. At the half, the Bruins trailed by a narrow margin 29-27.Â
In the second half, the Bruins shooting struggles continued as the team shot a mere 27% from the field including 10% from three-point range. As the game wore on, the Screaming Eagles began to build on their lead. Several costly turnovers squandered any sort of come back for the Bruins as the team desperately tried to score in any way they could. When the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins found themselves on the losing end of a 56-46 game.Â
"It is hard to win too many games when we shoot the way we did tonight," Coach LeViere said. "We had several goals in this game and we accomplished one so we are going to try to focus on that positive and not the negative. We have to learn what we can from this and put it behind us. Tomorrow we're going to get back at it and work hard on becoming better."Â
Kourtney Hoefler recorded a double-double for the Bruins with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She was the only player in double-figures for the team as the Bruins struggled offensively. The team committed 19 turnovers and were outrebounded 56-42.Â
With the loss, the Bruins drop their third straight and are 0-3 to begin the season. Next up, the team will travel to Florida to play in the Tip-Off Classic on Friday and Saturday night hosted by Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida.Â
