Box Score Despite 17 points by Maggi Ford, 31 costly turnovers were too much to overcome for the Lady Bruins as they fell 64-56 on the road at Southern Wesleyan University on Thursday night. "I'm disappointed that we didn't get the win but I am proud of our team for not giving up," Coach Mike LeViere said. "We were down by a lot but battled all the way back to make a game of it down the stretch."
The Bruins were coming off their first home with of the 2014-15 season with a 70-53 victory over Johnson University on Tuesday night. The team was 3-7 on the season and were looking to keep up their winning ways as they played conference rival Southern Wesleyan University. The Warriors have struggled to open the season at 1-4, but were hoping the energy of the hometown faithful would fuel their win on Tuesday night.
In the opening minutes, the Warriors used three straight possessions to jump out to an early 7-0 lead. The Bruins came roaring back on back-to-back three's by Bre Bullard and Maggi Ford to cut the deficit to one. From there, the Warriors began to slowly pull away as they battled each possession and forced several turnovers for the Bruins. After a Bre Bullard three-point shot the Bruins cut the lead to 28-20. The Warriors then scored 5 straight points to take a 33-21 lead into the locker room for halftime.
"We needed some stronger play from a few of our players," Coach LeViere said. "Overall we just needed to be more confident and much stronger with the ball."
In the second half, the Warriors extended the lead up to 37-21 behind a basket by Chelsie Waters. From there, the Bruins came roaring back behind the outside shooting of Maggi Ford to cut the lead to 60-56. The Warriors were able to make clutch free throws down the stretch to hold on for the 64-56 victory over BJU.
"Our second half was much better than our first," Coach LeViere said. "Anytime we commit that many turnovers it is going to be hard to overcome that and win. Some simple things we can fix and do better that will change the outcome of the game."
Maggi Ford led the Bruins with 17 points and Kendra Jeffcott scored 13. Kourtney Hoefler had another great game on the boards for the Bruins with 11 rebounds. With the loss, the team falls to 3-8 on the season.
Next up, the Bruins will be on the road again as they travel to Truett-McConnell College on Tuesday.
