Déjà Vu for Lady Bruins 58-44

Team uses suffocating defense to ground Warren Wilson College

Box Score
The Bruins women's basketball team took the court on Friday night as they welcomed the Warren Wilson College Owls. The Bruins had games postponed earlier in the week due to the snowfall that shutdown most of the state.

The two teams met just over a week ago with BJU getting a 70-67 overtime win in Asheville. It was a good bounce back after the team had lost two of their past three games. The Owls have been on fire as of late winning five of their last six with their only loss coming at the hands of the Bruins. The stage was set as this battle was about to begin.

In the opening minutes, the two teams traded baskets and the lead hoping to establish momentum. After a Maggi Ford three-point shot, the Bruins took the lead. The team rallied behind their outside shooting as the Bruins knocked down five three-pointers in the opening period while playing great defense and forcing 11 turnovers in the first half. Eventually, the Bruins built their lead up to double-digits before the Owls used a 5-0 run in the last minute to cut into the lead 30-22 at the break.

"We changed a lot of our defensive pressure up front," Coach LeViere said. "We thought we could pressure full court and thought we could pressure them into some turnovers. That really kept the tempo in our favor."

In the second half, the Owls came out strong and cut into the lead. The Bruins used a big three by Bre Bullard to spark a 6-0 run to jump back out to a double-digit lead. Still the Owls refused to quick as Dani Henderson powered the team back to within five. From there, the Bruins went on a 9-0 run behind a three-pointer from Maggi Ford and a three-point play from Hannah Tompkins. From there, the Bruins never looked back en route to a 58-44 victory at home.

"We stressed that we needed to keep running our stuff," Coach LeViere said. "That's our game plan and it works well if we run it the way we're supposed to. Overall it was a good group effort. Thankfully we were able to pull out the victory."

Kendra Jeffcott led the way for the Bruins with 12 points. Kim Spiecker added 9 and Maggi Ford scored 9 off the bench. The Bruins won the rebound margin 35-30 and forced 20 turnovers on the night. With the win, the team improves to 18-7 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will be on the road early next week as they travel to Southern Wesleyan University.
