The Lady Bruins have been playing stellar ball as of late with the team winning four of their last five games. The Bruins have been able to overcome several key injuries to players to post a 16-6 record. Their most recent win came against Clearwater Christian College last Friday night.
On Tuesday night, the Bruins welcomed in the Southern Wesleyan Warriors to Greenville. The Warriors posted a 6-11 record coming into the game with a two-game winning streak. The Bruins were hoping to keep up their winning ways as they took the court in front of the Bruin-faithful.
From the opening tip, the Bruins used the outside shooting of Julia Wright to gain the upper hand as she knocked down back to back three point shots in their first two possessions. The Warriors countered by driving through the lane for baskets and playing suffocating man to man defense. The Warriors were able to force several turnovers in the first half while building a double digit lead. The Bruins used an 8-0 run in the final two minutes to cut into the deficit and trail 34-37 at the half.
"They are a very aggressive defensive team," Coach LeViere said. "They like forcing steals and forcing turnovers and they were able to do that."
In the second half, the Warriors came out strong and were able to build their lead. The Bruins tried to claw their way back into the game, but costly turnovers continued to play into the hands of the Warriors as Southern Wesleyan capitalized on Bruins mistakes for points. As the half wore on, the Bruins were able to get good looks, but their shots didn't fall. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins found themselves on the losing end of a 72-63 loss.
"I told the ladies that this may be the happiest they will see me after a loss," Coach LeViere said. "I think overall we played really well but the story of the game was our turnovers. We were taking good shots, but the points off turnovers killed us."
Kendra Jeffcott returned from her injury to lead the team with 14 points. The Bruins committed 21 turnovers while allowing Southern Wesleyan to shoot 57% from three-point range. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 16-7 on the season. The team will have a few days to recover before traveling to Warren Wilson College on Thursday night.
