Box Score Although outplaying Toccoa Falls College for a majority of the game, the Eagles pulled off the upset on Friday night with a 1-0 victory. "We had the opportunities but just couldn't finish it," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Possession rate was good but we just couldn't get quality shots on goal. Their heart was bigger than ours and they wanted it more and got the goal they needed to win."
The Bruins were coming off a two-game road trip in which the team went 1-1 with a loss to Ohio Christian University and a 6-0 victory over Kentucky Christian University. The Eagles entered Friday's match with a 3-3-1 record having defeated Gordon State College on Tuesday night. These two teams were in for a bout as in all previous regular season matches, the winner was decided by a one-goal differential.
The Bruins had several chances, but didn't
capitalize in the 1-0 loss to Toccoa Falls College In the opening minutes, the Bruins looked poised and control as they moved their way into the attacking third. The team put consistent pressure on the net, but shots wouldn't find their way past Eagles goalie Emily Truelove as the match was locked in a 0-0 draw at the half.
As the second half began, the results were much of the same with the Bruins transitioning into the attacking third, only to find their opportunity squelched by the Eagles. The Bruins almost broke into the scoring column as Caitlyn Lehman battled her way through the defense and fired a shot off the cross bar.
In the 74th minute, Eagles forward Lizz Rice worked for open positioning and was able to generate space to lift a bending shot over the arms of Tori Anderson to break the scoreless tie 1-0. From there, the Eagles continued to stand strong on the defensive third.
As the match was nearing its end, the Eagles smelled the upset and stepped up their play to keep the Bruins at bay. The final buzzer handed the Bruins a tough loss in front of their home crowd as Toccoa Falls College escaped Greenville with a 1-0 win.
"It's over and we have to shake it off," Coach Carmichael said. "We have to more forward. This is soccer. It is a crazy game sometimes. It is a long season and we'll get another shot at this team."
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 4-2-1 on the season. The team lost despite out-shooting the Eagles 11-4 throughout the match. The Bruins will have little time to stomach this loss as the team will welcome the Oglethorpe University Stormy Petrels to Greenville on Saturday afternoon.
