Lady Bruins Blank Hawks 4-0

Team surges in the 2nd half to win second straight match

The Bruins offense was knocking on the door all throughout the first half. In the second half, Chowan's defensive walls came crumbling down as the Bruins scored four goals in the second half to come away with a 4-0 victory over the Chowan University Hawks on Saturday afternoon.

"The big goal for today was to get our possession game going," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "We've not been stringing together quality passes together and coughing things up so we were trying to create better opportunities. I think by and large that worked out for us especially in the second half."

The Bruins were coming off a 1-0 victory over Oglethorpe University last Saturday after the team suffered a disappointing 1-0 upset to Toccoa Falls College. Chowan University (NCAA DII) entered the match with a 0-5 record, having recorded only one goal during the 2014 season. The two programs have met twice with the Bruins winning both matches 3-1. The weather in Greenville was near perfection as the sunny skies and light breeze gave way to a pleasant atmosphere at Alumni Stadium.

In the opening minutes, the Bruins possessed well as they looked to move the ball into the attacking third. Great combination play almost allowed the team to pull ahead but Spencer Martin's shot was deflected just over the cross bar. The Bruins outshot the Hawks 8-1 in the first half, as the team had several open looks in front of the net. Despite their attempts, the two teams finished the half as they began it with a 0-0 score.

"We wanted to use the possession to open up the field and stretch the defense," Coach Carmichael said. "We were able to be patient and work the ball up the field for smarter and better opportunities."

In the second half, the Bruins were determined to take advantage of their opportunities. They would finally break into the scoring column in the 56th minute as Caitlyn Lehman sent a beautiful through pass to the feet of Rebecca Luttrell who finished the play with a low shot to the corner to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

The Bruins kept the pressure on and continued to work their way into the attacking third to score. Spencer Martin spearheaded an offensive charge and assisted Kristen Haertlein to make it 2-0. The team got some impressive play from freshman Anna Daulton throughout the second half. In the 78th minute, Daulton received a pass from Spencer Martin and buried the shot to make it 3-0 Bruins. She wasn't finished as 3 minutes later Daulton struck again with her 2nd goal to give the Bruins a comfortable 4-0 lead.

"We don't really have reserve players," Coach Carmichael said. "We have really great depth and each player that steps on the field steps up big time for us. We really have great depth which is going to be big for us the remainder of the season."

Despite their advances, Chowan had difficulty moving into the attacking third as the Bruins completed the clean sheet 4-0.

"Our next match is going to be a very tough game," Coach Carmichael said. "We have to keep our possession game high and be patient we should be okay."

With the win, the Bruins improve to 6-2-1 on the season. Anna Daulton led the way with two goals while Spencer Martin added 2 assists. Rebecca Luttrell and Kristen Haertlein each recorded a goal and Caitlyn Lehman picked up her 2nd assist of the year. The Bruins outshot the Hawks 17-3 in the match.

Next up, the Bruins will finish out their home stand on Tuesday night as they welcome Georgia Gwinnett College.
