Grizzlies Maul Bruins 6-0

BJU looks lost as Georgia Gwinnett rolls on Tuesday night

Box Score
The Georgia-Gwinnett Grizzlies used three goals in a ten-minute stretch in the first half to shutout the Lady Bruins a 6-0 on Tuesday night. "Just about everything went wrong for us tonight," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Technically we were not sharp and we didn't bring the game we had to against a quality opponent and we got punished big time for that."

The loss was difficult to swallow, but even more painful was the loss of Spencer Martin. The Bruins midfielder went to the ground grimacing in pain near the beginning of the match in what looked to be a serious knee injury. She would not return in the game. Martin will be evaluated by doctors later in the week to determine the extent of the injury. The two teams had met once in their history in 2012 when Georgia Gwinnett defeated the Bruins 7-1 in Georgia.

In the opening minutes, the Grizzlies flexed their muscles as the team used a fast pace of play and excellent possession to move into scoring lanes for shots. Bruins goalie Tessa Hoskinson was pounded with 22 shots throughout the course of the match. In the 24th minute of play, Amy Moreland put the Grizzlies on top with a lofting shot over Hoskinson. Less than 2 minutes later, the Grizzlies struck again to make it 2-0. The Grizzlies added an additional goal in the 33rd minute to go up 3-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Grizzlies continued to pressure the net with shots. The Bruins tried everything to get into a rhythm of play but the team managed only 2 shots throughout the entire match. The team's combination play was nonexistent as the Bruins struggled to move the ball into the attacking third.

The Grizzlies got back into the scoring column in the 67th minute as Mackenzie Bailey finished a pass from Nikki LeFevre to make it 4-0. From there, the Grizzlies used goals in the 73rd and 89th minute to leave Alumni Stadium with a 6-0 shutout of the Bruins.

"We need to move on," Coach Carmichael said. "This is one you need to move past quickly and get ready for the next few matches to come. This was just one of those collectively poor performances."

With the loss, the Bruins fall to 6-3-1 on the season. The team will look to bounce back as they play a two-game road trip this weekend in Florida against Florida College and Clearwater Christian College. The Bruins will be without several key players due to injury, but the team will look to bounce back on this road trip.
