The Bruins dropped their home opener 6-0
to Southern Wesleyan University on Saturday
Alejandro Sanchez spearheaded an onslaught of goals from Southern Wesleyan University as the Warriors defeated the Bruins 6-0 at Alumni Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

"We just didn't show up today," Bruins' head coach Jesse McCormick said. "I know it was hot but both teams had to play in it. We just didn't do what we needed to on either side of the ball."

This marks the third season the Bruins have opened their season against SWU. In 2012, the Bruins played their inaugural match and fell 8-4 to the Warriors. Last season, the Bruins fell to SWU 2-0 on the road in Central, South Carolina. This year, the Bruins knew they would be in for a tough match as the Warriors won the NCCAA DI national championship last year.

As the match began, the speed and experience of the Warriors showed as the team moved up the field with smooth combination play. The Bruins were sucked back into their defensive third as the team cleared out scoring chances in front of the net. In the 5th minute, Alejandro Sanchez bent a beautiful shot past the outstretched arms of Joseph Wooster to put the Warriors up 1-0.

The Bruins regrouped and tried to mount an offensive attack. They got a golden opportunity on a give-and-go as Travis Woodham received the pass and crossed it to John Wilson who had his shot sail over the net. In the 31st minute, the Warriors struck again as Joey Capone received a pass from Sebastian Castro and buried the shot to put the Warriors up 2-0 at the half.

In the second half, the Bruins fatigue began to show even more as the team tried everything they could to move into the attacking third. The Warriors capitalized on the Bruins mistakes with an onslaught of four goals in the second half. When the dust finally settled, the Warriors had spoiled the Bruins home opener with a 6-0 shutout.

"I think our consistency and energy levels need some work, but really our guys have to be stronger mentally," Coach McCormick said. "We're getting down a little bit too much so we have to be stronger mentally with that."

The Bruins will begin preparing for a two-game road trip beginning next weekend as the Bruins will travel to Florida to play against Southeastern University on Friday night.
