Box Score The Lady Bruins won their 2nd match in 24 hours as the team overcame injury and fatigue to defeat Trinity Baptist College 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville, Florida.
"Proud of our team for not giving up and finishing for another win," Coach Chris Carmichael said. "Hats off to the Eagles for grinding through a game that they had several chances to finish on top."
The Bruins came into the game having won four straight games and stood at 7-8 on the season. The Eagles struggled with as the team was in the midst of a 4-game skid. The two teams met earlier in the season in Greenville, with the Bruins winning big in a 6-0 shutout. The Bruins were looking to pickup another conference as they took the pitch in Jacksonville.
In the opening minutes, the Bruins and Eagles looked to establish control as both teams fought for possession. The Bruins found the scoreboard first as Mimi Lozano threaded a pass to Lauren Foushee who finished the play to make it 1-0 Bruins. The team continued to keep possession, but the Eagles refused to give the Bruins anything easy. Despite their chances, the Bruins failed to convert as the team took a slim 1-0 lead into the half.
In the second half, the Bruins came out looking to extend their lead. The Eagles rallied after they were given a red card on a penalty and began to push the ball up the field. The Eagles knotted up the score after bending a beautiful shot off a set piece just outside of the 18. Both teams knew they were in for an exciting finish as the Bruins and Eagles exchanged shots and opportunities but the match remained deadlocked at 1-1.
With 10 minutes remaining, the Bruins finally broke through as Paige Englehart slid a pass to Abby Davis who was able to chip a left-footed shot past the keeper to give the team a 2-1 lead. The Eagles launched into desperation mode as the team desperately looked for the equalizer, but the Bruins were able to hold on for their 5th straight win in a 2-1 victory over Trinity Baptist College.
"When we should have dominated possession, we let them in the game and had to battle our way to the win," Coach Carmichael said. "We needed to be more patient in the midfield third as they really played a compact defense and we needed to probe some more and do a better job on the ball."
Abby Davis continued her match scoring streak as she has now scored 10 goals in the last 5 games. Lauren Foushee picked up her 3rd goal of the season as the Bruins improved to .500 on the season with an 8-8 record. Next up, the Bruins will have another short rest before welcoming Columbia International University on Monday night at 5 p.m.
