Lady Bruins to a 65-57 win over Carver College
The Bruins began the 2015-16 on the road at a two-day tournament at Point University in West Point, Georgia. This would be the first-ever meeting between the women's basketball teams of Carver College and Bob Jones University. The Bruins finished the previous season with an 18-14 record and finished runner-up in the NCCAA DI south region. The Carver College Cougars women's basketball team was entering their first season of intercollegiate competition. The two teams would play their first contest under the new collegiate women's basketball rules, with four quarters to be played to determine a winner.

From the opening tip, the Bruins came out a bit slow as the Cougars jumped to an early 10-2 lead. Sha'Ron Brunson began to power the Bruins back into the game with back-to-back baskets but the Cougars continued to hold the lead. At the end of the first quarter play, the Bruins had come back to tie the game 12-12.

In the second quarter, newcomer Bhrianna Jackson helped the Bruins regain the lead with a 3-point shot to put the team up 15-12. Carver responded with back to back baskets to retake the lead as the two teams continued to battle. As the buzzer sounded for the half, the Cougars had a slim lead on the Bruins 29-27.

"We struggled a bit in the first half to find our rhythm," Coach LeViere said. "We had 3 goals of limiting their shooting, assists and in being able to outrebound them. We struggled in our scoring but despite that we were still in the game."

As the Bruins came out in the 3rd quarter, the Bruins leaned on the three and it delivered for them as Maggi Ford knocked down two three's and Kendra Jeffcott added a bomb from behind the arc to help the Bruins gain their biggest lead of the game 39-33. From there, the team played great defense and were able to use effective transition to continue to stay on top. In the final quarter, the Bruins continued to feed Ford the ball and she didn't disappoint as she recorded seven three-pointers in the game while shooting 58% from behind the arc.

As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins had battled back to gain their first victory of the season with a 65-57 win over Carver College. "I am happy with a win and the way the team came out and stayed positive despite our rough start," Coach LeViere said. "We played against an aggressive defense that was much bigger than us, but we showed poise in playing great defense and had good rebounding."

Maggi Ford led the way with 27 points while shooting 7-12 from three-point range. Freshman Bhrianna Jackson had 10 points and also chipped in 6 assists. Despite being a smaller team, the Bruins outrebounded the Cougars 51-42 throughout the contest to improve to 1-0 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will play Point University on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. in West Point, Georgia.
