Buzzer Beater Sinks Lady Bruins as Team Falls 69-66

Team battles back in the final minutes, but Reinhardt escapes with a win

Box Score
The Lady Bruins elation was quickly silenced by a buzzer-beater three-point shot as Reinhardt University stole the win with a 69-66 victory over Bob Jones University on Thursday night.

"We didn't lose the game on that last shot," Coach Mike LeViere said. "We lost the game by not playing well overall. I know it is fresh and emotions are high, but this probably was our worst game of the year. So now we have to learn from that and improve."

The Bruins brought a three-game winning streak into Thursday's game and stood at 4-1 on the season. The Eagles came in at 1-2 after back-to-back losses. The Bruins were hoping to continue their winning streak as they took the court in front of the hometown fans.

As the game began, the Eagles used good penetration and distribution as they created good looks to build an 11-4 lead. The Bruins responded on back-to-back threes from Sha'Ron Brunson and Maggi Ford to jump right back into the game, but the Eagles finished the first quarter up 18-12.

In the second quarter, the Bruins looked to climb back into the game and shored up their defense to force the Eagles into tough looks. With just over three minutes to go in the half, Kateca Favors knocked down a shot for the Eagles to give them their largest lead of the night 30-15. The Bruins refused to quit and closed out the half on a 9-0 run courtesy of two-straight threes by Julia Wright as the Bruins trailed 30-24 at the break.

"We felt like we could pressure them defensively, and we didn't have a lot of success in that in the first half," Coach LeViere said. "We seemed a little stagnate on both sides of the ball. We gave up some easy buckets and knew we needed to make some adjustments."

The Eagles came out and built another double-digit lead early on in the 3rd quarter. Each time the Bruins started to climb back into the game, the Eagles would knock down a key basket to keep the upper hand. Once again, the Bruins closed out the quarter strong as the Eagles held a 51-42 lead.

As the final quarter began, the Bruins began to lean on the hot shooting of Bhrianna Jackson as Jackson scored the first 7 points for the Bruins in the quarter to propel the team back into the game. "Coach just kept saying attack, attack, attack, and I was just ready to do whatever the team needed me to do," Jackson said. "I think the defense was working, which just pushed us to want to work harder to get the ball in the basket." After another three-point shot by Julia Wright, the Bruins climbed back to within striking distance at 57-52. Still, the Eagles continued to maintain the lead.

With under a minute remaining, Bhrianna Jackson recorded a three-point play to bring the game to 65-63. The Eagles missed one free throw and made one free throw on the next possession to go up by 3 with just 17 seconds to go. After a Bruins timeout, the team came out looking to draw even. Bhrianna Jackson drove the lane, taking the defense with her, and found Julia Wright at the top of the key and Wright buried the three-point shot with just 4 seconds to play. The Bruins joys would turn to sorrow as Lauren Mullinax received the pass and took an off-balance three-point shot which banked off the glass into the net as time expired to hand the Bruins a 69-66 loss.

"We know we are capable of performing a whole lot better than we did," Coach LeViere said. Bhrianna Jackson led the Bruins with 19 points while Julia Wright had 12 and Kendra Jeffcott scored 11 to go along with 9 rebounds. The Bruins forced 25 turnovers but lost the rebounding margin 30-26. With the loss, the team falls to 4-2 on the season and will welcome Converse College on Saturday night to Greenville.
