Georgia Gwinnett's pair of 2nd half goals enough to defeat Bruins at home

Box Score
On a night when the Bruins looked to send their five seniors out with a win, the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies spoiled the party to come away with a 2-0 victory on Friday night in Greenville, South Carolina.

"The game plan was to come and take it to them and play hard," Coach Jesse McCormick said. "We just need to play consistently. We could have started early on with more accurate and our pace of pass could have been better so that is something we'll work on going forward."

The Bruins struggled offensively as the team fell
2-0 to Georgia Gwinnett College on Friday night.
The Bruins came into the contest having not played a match in the last 13 days. Their last match was a thrilling 3-2 victory over Chowan University. Georgia Gwinnett College came into the match with a 8-5-3 record but had lost two of their last three games. The Bruins fans were ready to say a fond farewell to 5 seniors who helped to build the program since the inaugural 2012 season. It was an emotional scene at the half as the fans honored Daniel Herr, Joseph Wooster, Travis Woodham, Matt Moore and Ryan McCarty.

From the opening whistle, the Grizzlies showed their speed of play and began to rush into the attacking third with good combination play. The Bruins back line stood strong and prevented opportunities. The Bruins had a great chance in the 8th minute as Matt Moore chased the ball down in the corner and touched it past Grizzlies goalie Lewis Sharpe towards the end line. Moore sent a pass into the middle which found the feet of Ryan McCarty in front of the net, but a brilliant defensive play prevented the goal as the deflected shot sailed wide. Both teams exchanged multiple opportunities throughout the rest of the half, but the whistle sent both teams into the break even at 0-0.

"We had a handful of really good opportunities," Coach McCormick said. "Overall we were really inconsistent on the attack and especially in our ball movement."

In the 2nd half, both teams came out looking to gain the upper hand. The Grizzlies struck first as a corner kick opportunity squirted through Bruins defense to put Georgia Gwinnett up 1-0 just five minutes into the half. The Bruins came roaring back and had several chances on the offensive end, but each shot sailed wide. In the 74th minute, the Grizzlies struck again as Samuel Gomes received a pass in the center of the box and buried the shot to make it 2-0.

From there, the Bruins launched into the attack but the Grizzlies were able to turn aside every attempt as Georgia Gwinnett held on for a 2-0 victory over the Bruins in the final regular season match of the 2015 season.

"Our seniors have been tremendous both on and off the pitch," Coach McCormick said. "It's been great to have each one of them in the program. We're so thankful and blessed to have had them here."

With the loss, the Bruins fall to 10-6 on the season. The team will have a little time off as they prepare for the NCCAA DI South regional tournament November 18-20 in Columbia, South Carolina.
