Lady Bruins Fall to Royals in Season Opener 4-2

Team falls behind early, can't battle back as Warner University holds on for victory

Box Score
The Bruins opened the 2015 regular season in the rainy weather of Lake Wale, Florida, but it was Royals' player Jamie Murray who proved to be too much for the Bruins as she recorded 2 goals and had 2 assists in the Royals 4-2 victory over the Bruins. This match was the first of a 3-game road trip to open the season for the team.

"We are still making too many mistakes in our defensive third that have been very costly so far," Bruins head coach Chris Carmichael said. "This was a game we should have won and just needed to be better organized defensively. The good news is we are continually getting stronger each time we step on the field."

The Bruins fell behind early on in the match as good combination play allowed Nicole Screnrock to scoot a shot past Jessica Baun to put the Royals up 1-0. The Bruins responded as freshman Abby Davis scored her first career goal to tie the game up at 1-1.

The two teams traded possession back and forth with each trying to gain the upperhand. Just before the half, the Royals would climb into the lead as Jamie Murray scored the goal to put Warner up 2-1 going into the half.

"Both teams created a number of goal scoring opportunities," Coach Carmichael said. "We had three that we should have finished but had a good effort offensively."

In the second half, the Bruins looked to climb back into the game and worked on possessing the ball more efficiently to move into the attacking third. Several opportunities by Tash Walters, Jenn Wise and others sailed just wide as the Bruins struggled to find the back of the net. The Royals would add to their lead in the 60th minute as Naybet Febo scored to put the Royals up 3-1.

The Bruins refused to give up as Anna Daulton provided a spark off the bench with a beautiful goal in the 67th minute to climb the Bruins back within one 3-2. The Royals then put the nail in the coffin just two minutes later as Murray scored her second goal of the match to put the Royals up 4-2.

The Bruins looked for an answer, but the Royal defense stood strong to keep the Bruins at bay. The final whistle handed the Bruins their first loss of the 2015 season as the Royals won 4-2.

"Many of the problems we had in the preseason we fixed as our combination play and buildup were much better," Coach Carmichael said. "We're still experimenting with different sets as we had many hampered throughout the preseason which limited our preparation. I am very confident we'll be able to turn things around."

Abby Davis and Anna Daulton each scored a goal for the Bruins while Tash Walters recorded an assist. The Bruins were outshot 10-7 throughout the match. Goalkeeper Jessica Baun recorded 6 saves while allowing 4 goals in her first career start. Next up, the Bruins will play the 2nd of their 3-game road trip tomorrow afternoon as the team will play their first conference game of the season in a matchup with Johnson University of Florida.
