Box Score The Lady Bruins overcame a slow start to win their third straight game with a 67-51 victory over Pensacola Christian College on Friday night. "We're getting more comfortable with who we are as a team," Coach Mike LeViere said. "I was happy we didn't lose composure and continued to battle for the win."
Coming off back to back victories, the Lady Bruins were looking to keep up their winning ways as they welcomed the Eagles to Greenville. Still, the Eagles looked to play the role of spoiler in front of the Bruin faithful.
Brianna Delaney's excellent post play propelled
the Bruins to a 67-51 victory over PCC.From the opening tip, the Eagles rode the hot shooting of Alyssa Loudermilk as she knocked down two threes to help PCC jump out to an early 13-4 advantage. The Bruins responded with a 9-0 run courtesy of Bhrianna Jackson, who provided the spark off the bench to help the Bruins battle back to even the score 13-13. The Eagles capitalized to close out the quarter with a 17-13 lead.
In the second quarter, the Bruins came out looking to climb back into the game, but the team went cold from the outside as the Bruins were 0-13 from beyond the arc in the first half. The team stayed in the game by working the ball inside to Brianna Delaney and also gained trips to the line to keep the game close. Defensively, the Bruins executed a suffocating press that forced the Eagles into several turnovers which translated into points. After Bridgette Gleed knocked down a jumper, the Bruins took a 25-22 advantage. The team continued to keep the lead as the Bruins went into the half up 31-28.
"
Overall we thought we could pressure some turnovers and capitalize defensively and run on them with our tempo," Coach LeViere said. "Our shooting and rebounding was poor in the first half, and we knew that we needed to overcome that to be able to win the game." As the second half began, the Bruins built on their lead. Hannah Tompkins started the scoring for the team by knocking down back to back three point shots to put the Bruins up 37-29. The Eagles slowly began to get back into the game, but the Bruins closed out the third quarter strong and clung to a 45-36 lead.
In the final quarter of play, the Eagles tried to claw their way back into the game as they battled back to draw even at 45-45. From there, the Bruins went on a 10-0 run and closed out the game by outscoring the Eagled 20-5 to come away with a 67-51 victory.
"One thing Coach always says is the next one is going in," Bruins guard Hannah Tompkins said. "You have to forget about the last one and have confidence for the next shot. We got into a groove and calmed down a little on offense in letting it develop and taking the open shot which helped us get the win."
Hannah Tompkins led the Bruins with 13 points and 8 rebounds while Brianna Delaney chipped in 12 points and 6 rebounds. Bhrianna Jackson sparked the Bruins with 10 points off the bench as the team won their third straight an improved to 11-9 on the season. The Bruins pressure worked almost to perfection as the team forced over 20 turnovers on the night while winning the rebounding margin 40-33. Next up, the Bruins will have a tough road test as they battle Erskine College on Tuesday.
