The Lady Bruins kept on rolling as the team won their 4th match in a row as they swept Morris College on Tuesday night 3-0 (25-5, 25-14, 25-13) in Sumter, South Carolina. "This match really helped us see some weaknesses that we still need to work on before the regional tournament," Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "We also were able to get our bench some significant playing time which helps make us stronger as a team."
The Bruins entered Tuesday's match after back to back wins on Saturday afternoon including defeating Morris College in straight sets in the Davis Field House. Tonight, it was the Hornets turn to welcome the Bruins to their home court as the two teams began the match.
Kirstin Christmas helped to get the Bruins going in the opening set with a strong serve attack which helped the team build a quick lead. Christmas and Kendra Jeffcott also were dominant on the attacking front as the pair contributed several kills in the opening set. The Hornets couldn't slow the Bruins as BJU won the first set 25-5.
In the second set, the Hornets jumped out to an early lead as they looked to even up the match. Emily Wynn strung together a series of serves to help put the Bruins back on top. The offense began to gel as the team cut down on their errors to extend the lead. Rachel Tubbs setup the Bruins attack and Kendra Jeffcott finished them off as the Bruins pushed their lead to double digits. The team got an added boost from Michaela McCants and Katelyn MacDowell as the held off a Hornets rally to win the second set 25-15.
The Bruins came out with a lot of confidence in the third set as the team again used strong serving attack to build the lead. Olivia Vosburgh had six straight points on the serve and did an excellent job in setting up Dani Payne, Katelyn MacDowell and Kendra Jeffcott for kills. The Hornets couldn't seem to find an answer to the Bruins dominate attack as BJU kept the upper hand. Marjorie Elliott put an exclamation point on the Bruins victory as she served out the win with three aces and three kills to help the Bruins take the 3rd set 25-13 and the match 3-0.
Kendra Jeffcott and Kirstin Christmas each had 6 kills for the Bruins on the night while Saleena Walker played strong defensively with 10 digs in two sets. With the win, the Bruins improve to 19-8 on the season. The team will return home for a two-day stretch of matches at the Davis Field House. First up, the Bruins will welcome John Wesley University on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
