The Lady Bruins continued to fire on all cylinders as the team put together a dominant road victory on Thursday night with a 3-0 win over Wesleyan College (25-8, 25-18, 25-6). "Our bench came up big for us tonight," Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "We were nursing several injuries and we had several step up for us throughout the match."
The Bruins came into the match after winning back to back matches at home last Friday night. The team was in the midst of a winning streak in which they have won seven straight matches and won 24 of a possible 26 sets. The Bruins traveled to Macon, Georgia for the first of their three final road games of the regular season before the region playoffs.
In the opening set against the Wolves, the Bruins came out strong behind the attack line of Erin Jarvis and Marjorie Elliott as the team went on an 8-0 run to take an early 10-2 lead. The team also got great serving from Lauren Johnson as the junior had several aces in the opening set. The Bruins stormed out of the gate and never looked back as they took the first set 25-8.
Wesleyan College looked to even the match in the second set as they scored four straight points to take a 4-2 advantage. From there, the two teams began to trade points, but the Wolves slowly increased their lead to 10-6. Lauren Johnson and Olivia Vosburgh provided the serving spark and Kendra Jeffcott put together several kills as the Bruins battled back to tie the set 12-12. With momentum, the Bruins continued to rally and built a lead. Rachel Tubbs served five straight to help the Bruins close out the 2nd set in impressive fashion with a 25-18 win.
In the third set, Lauren Johnson again provided a dominant serving attach as she helped the Bruins go on another 8-0 run to take a 10-3 lead. Amber Smith then recorded three aces in a row to help the Bruins maintain their lead. The Wolves would only score 3 more points the rest of the set as the Bruins were able to force the Wolves into several errors. Smith continued to serve well as the Bruins closed out the match with a dominant 25-6 win to sweep the match 3-0.
"Our serving was tough as we finished the night with 20 aces," Coach Denny said. "Even though we had some players start out slow they came up big in the final set to help us win the match."
Kendra Jeffcott finished the night with 13 kills while Laura Gaston and Marjorie Elliott each contributed 6 kills apiece. Rachel Tubbs finished the night with 23 assists. The story of the night was Lauren Johnson's serving attack as she had 10 aces to go along with 11 digs. The win marks the 8th in a row for the Lady Bruins as the team is 23-8 on the season.
Next up, the Bruins will compete in their final matches of the regular season on Saturday as the team competes in a tri-match in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Bruins will face Bridgewater College at 1 p.m. and William Peace University at 3 p.m.
