The Bruins volleyball team remain undefeated in region play as the team swept the Toccoa Falls College Screaming Eagles 3-0 on Thursday night in Toccoa Falls, Georgia (25-11, 25-20, 25-17).
"This was an important match for us against a solid region opponent," Coach Vickie Denny said. "We came out and played very strong defense coupled with a strong offensive game. We had several players step up for us which helped us pick up the win."
The Bruins entered Thursday's match having lost two of their last three games. The team had rebounded well after back to back losses with a dominant win over Morris College on Saturday. In practice, the team was able to focus on key areas of improvement which showed in their match against the Screaming Eagles. Toccoa Falls College came into the game with a 7-11 record having won two of their last three games.
From the opening set, the Bruins would ride the dominant offensive play of Kirstin Christmas, Erin Jarvis and Kendra Jeffcott as the team built a quick lead. The team was able to block well defensively which disrupted the Eagles rhythm of play. The Bruins never looked back as they took the first set 25-11.
In the second set, the Eagles looked to draw even and used a late run to cut into the Bruins lead. But again, the offense of BJU was too dominant as several key kills by Christmas ended any hope of a comeback as the Bruins edged the Eagles 25-20 in the second set.
The Bruins continued to ride the momentum into the 3rd set as their confidence grew with each point. Rachel Tubbs provided the setting touch which fed the three-pronged killing attack for the Bruins. The Eagles tried to claw their way back in the set, but the Bruins wouldn't be denied as they won the third set 25-17 and the match 3-0.
"This week in practice, we had two days of working on our defensive system of play and tonight it showed," Coach Denny said. "We hope to take our strong defense into next game as we know we will be facing a tough opponent."
Kirstin Christmas led the way for the team with a double/double on the night (14 kills, 20 digs). Kendra Jeffcott had 11 kills and Erin Jarvis contributed 8 in the match. With the win, the Bruins move to 8-0 in region play and 13-5 on the season. Coach Vickie Denny moved one step closer to her 1,000th career victory as tonight's win moves her career total to 996 wins.
The Bruins will have a quick turnaround as play again on Friday night. The team will welcome Tennessee Wesleyan University to the Davis Field House at 7 p.m.
