Four players scored in double figures and the Bruins offense shot an impressive 48% from beyond the arc as the team defeated Johnson and Wales University of Florida 91-76 in Lake Wales, Florida on Saturday afternoon.
"Everyone contributed for us in this win and it was a really good team effort," Bruins Coach Mike LeViere said. "We played great defense which fed our offense in finding the open shooter to score."
The team came into Saturday's game after a disappointing 63-48 loss to Warner University in which the team allowed a 4th quarter rally to lose the game. They were hoping to bounce back as they took on the Wildcats.
In the opening quarter, the Wildcats stormed out of the gate and built an 11-3 lead. Hannah Tompkins then knocked down a three-point shot as the Bruins began to find a rhythm on offense. Brianna Delaney helped the Bruins stay close to the Wildcats as the senior made several jump shots around the key. As the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, the Bruins trailed the Wildcats 19-16.
Hannah Tompkins knocked down three straight buckets to open the 2nd quarter as the Bruins gained their first lead of the game. The team continued to stretch that lead as they put together several defensive stops and found the open shooter on offense for points. The team also controlled the rebounding margin as the Bruins took away second chance opportunities from the Wildcats, and created second chance opportunities on offense to extend plays. Tompkins continued to dominate as she scored 14 points in the quarter to give the Bruins a 44-33 lead at the break.
As the second half began, the Bruins picked up where they left off as Brianna Delaney scored back to back buckets sparking a 12-4 run to open the quarter. The Bruins also got three-point boosts from Sha'Ron Brunson and Sydeny Bedsaul as the Bruins built a large lead. With just one more quarter to play, the Bruins had a 70-51 lead.
In the final quarter, the Wildcats tried to make one last attempt at a rally to get back in the game. But the Bruins defense continued to force tough shots while converting on the offensive end. The final buzzer capped off an impressive offensive night for the team as the Bruins defeated the Wildcats 91-76.
"It was a night and day difference from the way we played last night into today," Coach LeViere said. "Happy to be playing the way we are and we are going to get better."
Brianna Delaney had a monster game for the team with 22 points and 22 rebounds while Hannah Tompkins finished the night with 25 points while shooting 62% from the field. The team dominated the rebounding 51-24 while forcing 18 Wildcat turnovers. With the win, the Bruins improve to 3-2 on the season.
Next up, the Bruins will battle Brevard College in North Carolina on Tuesday night.
