Lady Bruins Soar Past Screaming Eagles 77-43

Box Score

The Lady Bruins basketball team went on a 10-0 run to start the game and never looked back as the team coasted to a 77-43 victory at home on Monday night over Toccoa Falls College.

"We did a good job of using our height to our advantage," Bruins Coach Mike LeViere said. "We really weren't sure how they were going to defend us, but their zone really allowed us to move the ball and get it into the post, and maximize that height advantage tonight. We got some key contributions from players and I was proud of the way we played tonight.

The Bruins definitely benefited from their height advantage in the game as Brianna Delaney, Amanda Bates and Kylee Leffew combined for 27 rebounds helping the team to win the rebounding battle 51-25.

Defense was also a key factor in the game as the Bruins held Toccoa Falls to just six total points in the first quarter. Offensively, the Bruins were able to ride the hot shooting of Hannah Tompkins and work the ball inside for points. The team ended the first quarter with an 18-6 advantage.

The Eagles opened the second quarter with a three, but were shut down for nearly the next nine minutes in the second period. The Bruins defense was all over the floor pressuring the Eagles into 15 turnovers while tallying 9 steals in the game. The good defensive play fed the Bruins transition offense as they team continued to stretch their lead. At the end of the first half, BJU led 41-11, holding an astonishing 30 point lead.

The Bruins got an unexpected spark from forward Kylee Leffew. Leffew was the PlanFIRST Player of the Game as she scored 14 points and snagged 4 rebounds while shooting an incredible 60% from the floor. "When there is not a hand in front of my face, that's my green light to shoot," Leffew said. "They weren't pressuring me so I was okay with taking the shots."

In the second half, the Eagles showed signs of life as they scored 17 points in the third quarter. But the Bruins offense matched the Eagles as the team refused to let TFC climb back into the game.

Although allowing 32 points in the second half, the Bruins continued to keep their foot on the accelerator and push hard to score. The Eagles couldn't find anything to slow the Bruins down as BJU rolled to a 77-43 win

Hannah Tompkins led the Bruins with 22 points and 9 rebounds on the day while forward Brianna Delaney recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds. With the win, the Bruins climb back to 4-4 on the season. The team will have a little break for the Thanksgiving holiday, but will be back in action on November 29 at Johnson University.
