On Saturday, the Bob Jones University Bruins Shooting Sports team competed in their first event of its inaugural 2016-17 season at the Glock Shooting Sports Foundation Match (GSSF) in Charleston, South Carolina.
"This was a valuable experience for our competitive shooters," Bruins Shooting Coach Mike Wilkie said. "They got to see, some for the first or second time, how an organized match is operated and what it is like to be in the atmosphere of competitive shooting. Many of the competitors in this match have been competing for years. That said, our athletes will learn to be better competitors the more tournaments we enter and soon we will be competing head-to-head with established collegiate shooting teams."
The competition matched speed and accuracy as participants maneuvered through different stations and targets. Each shooter was judged and ranked according to fastest time, and the amount of shots needed to hit each target. Bruins sophomore Nathaniel Haefka placed 38th overall with a score of 88.93. Ben Chisom scored a 121.77 to finish 68th and Tyler Moritsch finished 75th with a score of 137.89.
"This match gave the team a good opportunity to experience a competitive shooting environment and showed us some areas of improvement," Bruins senior Matthew Bright said after finishing 93rd overall. "After seeing the team compete this weekend, I would say we have an exciting season ahead of us."
The Shooting Sports team will compete next in a Georgia/South Carolina State Match in Athens, Georgia on February 11.
