Box Score Emmanuel College began the game with a 17-3 run and never let up as the Lions defeated the Lady Bruins 80-49 on Tuesday night in Greenville, South Carolina. "I really appreciated our players continuing to work hard and sticking with it," Bruins Coach Mike LeViere said. "We had a defensive lapse at the beginning of the game, but in the second half I thought we held our own. The team showed a lot of character tonight."
The loss handed the team their 4th straight as they fall to 4-8 on the season. The Lions jumped out right from the start as they scored on high percentage shots around the rim while limiting the Bruins offensively. Still, the Bruins closed out the quarter strong as Sarah Thomsen hit back-to-back threes to give the Bruins some life headed into the second quarter.
Thomsen hit another three in the opening minutes of the second quarter as the Bruins trailed just 23-20. The Lions responded by going on a 22-5 run the remainder of the quarter to take a dominant lead into the half 45-25.
Despite playing from behind, the Lady Bruins came out strong defensively in the third quarter as they limited the Lions chances. But the Bruins struggled to gain any ground as the offense shot just 22% from the field for the game. The Lions took advantage by continuing to stretch their lead. At the end of the third quarter, the Bruins trailed 59-33.
Although a win was beyond reach, the Bruins came out determined to play better in the final quarter. The team was able to string together short bursts of offense as Thomsen again was big for the team. But it wasn't enough as the Lions ran away with an 80-49 victory.
Sarah Thomsen had one of her best games on the season, posting a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. The Bruins struggled with 23 turnovers, but despite being undersized the team was neck and neck with the Lions in rebounding losing the margin 35-34.
With the loss, the Bruins fall to 4-8 on the season. Next up, the team will be on the road on Friday afternoon as they play a region game against Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida.
