Under the blazing heat of the Florida sky, the Lady Bruins captured their 4th straight victory with a 2-0 win over Trinity Baptist College on Saturday afternoon. "The team worked very hard and did a great job of maintaining possession and keeping the ball in our attacking half," Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "That possession rate helped us to execute good combination flank play which created a number of scoring opportunities."
The Bruins came into the match on the heels of a victory on Friday evening over Johnson University of Florida. The Eagles came into the match with a 3-2-1 record after battling to a 1-1 draw with Toccoa Falls College on Friday night. The Bruins were looking to wrap up their Florida road trip with a win as they took the pitch.
In the opening minutes, the two teams traded possession with each trying to gain the upper hand. Abby Davis found space early on and rifled a shot towards the net, but it was snagged by Eagles keeper Teisa Keith. The Bruins had several opportunities in the opening minutes, but the team remained scoreless. All that would change in the 24th minute of play as Bruins striker Mimi Lozano scored on a brilliant strike from outside the box to put the team up 1-0. The team almost doubled their score as Paige Englehart just missed scoring off a corner kick.
With the half drawing to a close, the Eagles came charging back looking for the equalizer. The Bruins defense stood strong as sweeper Jennifer Townsend helped to anchor the Bruins back line in turning away opportunities. At the half, the Bruins clung to a 1-0 advantage.
In the second half, the Bruins looked to add to their lead while the Eagles were hoping to get on the board and tie the match. Bruins' keeper Kristen Haertlein made several saves for the team throughout the match as the defense came through time and time again to allow BJU to keep the lead. In the 62nd minute, the Bruins got some insurance as Lozano fed a pass to Abby Davis who scored a goal to make it 2-0.
Sensing the match slipping away, the Eagles came back on the attack as they looked to climb back into the game. The Bruins continued to maintain their possession which allowed them to keep the Eagles from gaining scoring opportunities. As the final buzzer sounded, the Lady Bruins had held on for a 2-0 victory over Trinity Baptist College.
"We did very well defensively to stay organized and regain possession quickly," Coach Carmichael said. "A hearty congrats to TBC for playing a very tough game. We're happy for the win, but know we have more tough matches ahead of us."
With the win, the Bruins improve to 4-2 on the season and 2-0 in region play. Mimi Lozano led the Bruins with 1 goal and 1 assist while the team outshot the Eagles 19-1 on the night. Next up, the Bruins will welcome Montreat College to Greenville on Tuesday night at 8 p.m.
