Lady Bruins Keep Winning Streak Alive

Team wins sixth straight with victory over Brewton Parker College

Box Score
The Bruins women's volleyball team continued to show dominance on the court beating Brewton-Parker College in four sets (24-26, 25-21, 25-10, 25-12). The Bruins returned to their home court after their successful road trip to Florida and looked to further their winning streak of five games.

In the first set there was good energy from both teams. The Bruins had some elaborate volleys, but couldn't complete them for points. The Barons took advantage and gained a 10-2 lead. The Bruins started to chip away at the lead as Saleena Walker served a run of five serves with two aces as the team battled back to go up 17-15. Their rally wasn't as the Barons overpowered the Bruins and won the set 26-24.

"We dug a pretty big hole in the first set," Coach Vickie Denny said. "It was a tough loss in the first set, but I felt we could hang with the team if we eliminated our errors."

The second set continued right where the first one left off. The teams were both fighting to get ahead, but this time the Bruins weren't in a hole. Strong blocking from Erin Jarvis and powerful hitting from Kendra Jeffcott helped keep the Bruins in the game. Back and forth the set went until the Bruins got ahead 21-15, but with only four points to go the Barons clawed their way back into the game. This time, it was the Bruins who finished the set strong as solid hitting and blocking from Kirstin Christmas put away the second set 25-21 for BJU.

"Every game, every mistake you make you want to just put behind you and move on," Bruins hitter Kendra Jeffcott said. "We knew we could play better than we did those first two sets."

The Bruins came out on the court in the third set with a different energy and that translated into good play on the court. With a short but solid serving streak by Lauren Johnson the Bruins took a 9-3 lead. Saleena Walker followed that up with seven in a row, including two aces giving the Bruins an even larger lead. Though both teams had some exceptional volleys the Bruins capitalized off the Barons mistakes to take a dominant win 25-10 in the third set.

In the fourth and final set the Bruins came out with a bang ready to finish what they had started. But the Barons were consistent; refusing to give the Bruins the lead they were looking for. Each time the Bruins would score, the Barons seemed to have an answer in response, but then Johnson walked back to the line to serve. Eleven serves later Lauren Johnson had rallied the Bruins to win the set 25-12, and take the match 3 -1.

"We'll continue work to eliminate our mistakes and make the other team earn their points," Coach Denny said.

Erin Jarvis led the team with 13 kills. Kendra Jeffcott led the team with 3 blocks and Rachel Tubbs led the team with 42 assists. On Thursday the team will be on the road to face Laurel University before returning home on Friday to play Piedmont International University. With six straight wins, the Lady Bruins will look to keep their momentum moving forward.
