The Bob Jones University Bruins extended their winning streak to 9 matches in a row, but that streak would end the very same day as the team fell to Johnson and Wales University 1-3 (22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 13-25). The night started off with a jolt of excitement as the Bob Jones University women's volleyball team destroyed Converse College (NCAA DII) in three quick sets (25-10, 25-8, 25-15).
In the first set Erin Jarvis and Rachel Tubbs led the Bruins to a solid lead of 9-3. Saleena Walker contributed several kills early on as the Bruins continued to increase their lead. With a strong serve game and several kills by Jeffcott the Bruins extended the lead 16-4 and kept it with good blocking and defensive play. Tubbs did what she does best, setting up others, and soon the Bruins built their lead to 21-5. Although the Valkyries had a small comeback the Bruins took the first set handily 25-10.
The second set started a little slower with both teams throwing the possession back and forth. But Jeffcott soon landed back-to-back kills bringing the Bruins up 8-3. Even after Converse College called a timeout, the Bruins picked up where they left off and soon their lead was 11-3. Jeffcott continued to play a great offensive game making the difference for the Bruins and leading them to a 25-8 victory in the second set.
The third set started similarly to the second with the score going back and forth, but this time the Valkyries came away with the lead 9-6. The Bruins wouldn't let up, however and battled it out winning the next four points to gain a one-point advantage 10-9. Emily Wynn served back-to-back aces to give the Bruins a 14-11 lead. Sensing the sweep, the Bruins put their offense in high gear as Jeffcott, Christmas and company consistently killing it the Bruins built their lead to win the set 25-15 and the match 3-0. This was the 9th straight victory for the team.
"It's exciting playing as a team," Kendra Jeffcott said. "Once the momentum gets started it all becomes more fun."
In the second match of the night the Bruins put up a fight, but could not come away with the win as they lost to Johnson & Wales University in four sets. In the first set of the match the Bruins faced a rough start as the Wildcats pulled to a 4-1 lead. Eventually with a couple key kills by Jeffcott and Jarvis the Bruins took the lead 10-9. The score stayed close with neither team able to keep the serve for long. The Bruins got ahead 15-13, but the Wildcats' tough defense led by strong blockers soon made the difference as Johnson & Wales took the lead 21-16. Though they didn't give up, the Bruins late rally was not soon enough as they lost the first set 22-25.
In the second set, the Bruins came out hustling and it showed. Kirstin Christmas got two kills right at the beginning followed by two service points to give the Bruins a 7-3 lead. The game continued without either team gaining a huge lead until Lauren Johnson served five points in a row, and Jarvis had three perfect kills bringing the Bruins up 15-9. But the Wildcats clawed their way back into the game with a rally of their own to eventually overtake the Bruins lead 21-20. The home crowd in the Davis Field House were trying to rally their Bruins to capture the set as the long volleys dragged out the ending. Jeffcott got a couple crucial kills in, but again it wasn't enough as the team came up short again 23-25.
"We struggled tonight on our serve/receive which has been one of our strong points for most of the season," coach Vickie Denny said.
The third set, Jarvis had a strong first serve rotation giving the Bruins a 5-2 lead, but once again they lost it as the Wildcats fought to take it back 8-6. Back and forth the points go up to the very last serve. Both teams eventually tied again at 20-20 and then Kirstin Christmas served and gave the Bruins the advantage. A couple excruciatingly long volleys later the Bruins were up 23-21. Then with an ace served by Tubbs and a wicked kill hit by Jarvis, the Bruins gained their first set victory 25-22.
The fourth and final set started with another long volley, but the Wildcats proved they didn't want to play another set and took a huge lead 9-1. Having lost their momentum, the Bruins couldn't seem to recover. They continued to battle, but could not keep the serve causing them to fall behind 19-9. The Wildcats rode the momentum and took the fourth set decisively 25-13 and the match 3-1.
"Coach reminded us that we each have something we can learn form this loss tonight," Jeffcott said. "And hopefully we can work on it in practice and improve some by Saturday."
Jeffcott led the team with a total of 26 kills and 3 blocks. Johnson had four aces, and Tubbs did a great job setting with a nightly total of 72 assists. "It's a hard loss, but hopefully a good one, and one that we can learn from," Coach Denny said.
With the win and the loss, the Bruins volleyball team sits at 10-3 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will travel to Florida to take on Pensacola Christian College on Saturday morning.
