Tigers Hand Lady Bruins Tough Home Loss

Box Score

The Lady Bruins started off the game well, but the Tigers proved to be too much for the Bruins as the team fell to Vorhees College 67-45 on Tuesday night in Greenville, South Carolina. Hannah Tompkins was the only player to score in double figures with 11 points as the team shot just 15% from the floor in the 2nd half to drop to 9-11 on the season.

"We let them be the assertive team early on and we weren't attacking where we had opportunity," Bruins Coach Mike LeViere said. "We turned the ball over too much, but even with that we were still in the game in the 2nd half. We did some good things, but overall the offense really struggled for us tonight."

The Bruins ladies were neck and neck with the Tigers throughout the first quarter, but the Tigers went on a big run to take a 33-22 lead into halftime. The Bruins started off the second quarter with a bang as the team got great play from Hannah Tompkins and Sarah Thomsen. The team clawed back within 6 points near the end of the third quarter, but another costly run by the Tigers to close out the quarter put the Bruins back on their hees. In the fourth quarter, Nijah Davis and the Voorhees Tigers extended their lead and ended up putting the game away 67-45.

The storyline of the night for the Tigers was the incredible play of Nijah Davis who knocked down six three pointers on the night to finish with 26 points in the game. It seemed like every time the Bruins hit shots and started to go on a run, Davis would hit another three to stop any rally.

The Tigers also employed a full-court press, forcing the Bruins into 21 turnovers on the night. "We struggled against their pressure in passing the ball before we were trapped," Bruins forward Kylee Leffew said. "We needed to be able to work the ball on offense and find the open shot."

The Bruin did take some positives away in the game as Leffew came off the bench and really impacted the team in the 3rd quarter. She scored 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in her 27 minutes of playing time. Another positive takeaway from the game was the Bruin's team rebounding as the team out-rebounded Voorhees 39-33. The Lady Bruins also shot an incredible 17-21 on free throws in the game, but the offensive struggles combined with the turnovers turned into a tough loss in front of the Bruin faithful.

"We're going to come back together as a team and look at our mistakes and recognize them and move on to the next one," Coach LeViere said. "We know we can recover from this and learn from this."

With the loss, the Bruins move to 9-11 on the season. Next up, the team will welcome Columbia International University to Greenville on Friday night at 6 p.m.
