A strong second half performance fueled the Lady Bruins soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Trinity Baptist College on homecoming weekend. Over 1,000 fans packed Alumni Stadium as the team won their 4th straight match and moved to 7-7 on the season and 2-0 in region play.
The first half was very competitive as BJU and Trinity were both creating scoring opportunities. The shots were about even as the Bruins had four and the Eagles three throughout the first 45 minutes.
In the 27th minute Kaitlyn Hummel was taken down in the box by a Trinity defender, forcing a penalty kick. Coach Carmichael called on Hummel to take the PK and she delivered with a brilliant strike into the lower left corner of the net to give BJU a 1-0 lead. That goal went on to be the only score of the first half as the team led 1-0 at the break.
"At halftime we knew we had to improve our ability to keep possession," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "We did a great job of possessing the ball in the attacking third in the second half."
After a close and competitive first 45 minutes, the BJU Lady Bruins were able to take control of the game in the second half. Just a few minutes into the half, Kaitlyn Hummel connected with Abby Davis on a beautiful cross into the middle of the box. Davis was able to punch it in to give BJU a 2-0 lead.
"I happened to be in the right place at the right time," Davis said. "Kaitlyn Hummel gave me a beautiful pass and I was able to take advantage of it."
In the 48th minute, Abby Davis continued to give the Trinity defense problems. Davis broke free on the far right side of the box and was able to finesse a shot past the goalkeeper to extend the lead to 3-0.
Abby Davis continued to make an impact on the game with her passing. In the 62nd minute she found Kristyn Rygh on a cross, and Rygh was able to beat two Trinity defenders to score and give BJU a 4-0 lead. Senior Anna Daulton scored the fifth and final goal of the night in the 70th minute via an assist from Megan Brubaker. Although the Eagles were able to score late, the final buzzer handed the Bruins a 5-1 victory.
"Going into our next game we need to stay with the same attacking mindset," said Coach Carmichael. "It's important for us to keep a high possession rate."
Abby Davis finished the night with two goals as she has tallied a team-leading 11 goals on the season. Kaitlyn Hummel finished the night with one goal and one assist as the team improved to .500 on the season. The Lady Bruins will be back in action on Tuesday October 17th, as they will travel to Franklin Springs, Georgia to take on Emmanuel College.
