The top-ranked Lady Bruins were upset on Thursday afternoon as the team fell to #3 ranked Trinity Baptist College 1-0 in Jacksonville, Florida. "We did a great job controlling possession and the tempo of the game and spent most of the game in our attacking half and third," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "We created a number of solid goal scoring opportunities but just kept coming up short."
The Bruins and Eagles met just five days ago in Greenville with the Bruins winning handily 5-1. With the region playoffs just weeks away, both teams knew this match could spell the difference between #1 and #2 seeding in the regional tournament.
In the opening minutes, the Bruins were able to control the ball as they worked into the attacking third. The team had several chances throughout the first half, including a shot off the crossbar but the two teams ended the first half tied 0-0.
As the second half began, the Bruins and Eagles knew that one goal would probably be the difference in the match. Each team was able to gain opportunities on frame, but the score remained tied into the late stages of the game. The crossbar again turned aside a Bruins goal as Ally Jenkins shot bounced off the bar and out. With just minutes remaining, the Eagles broke the scoreless tie as Dasia Shepherd scored to give TBC a 1-0 lead. Despite their efforts to equalize, the Bruins fell short as they lost the match 1-0.
"I congratulate Trinity Baptist for hanging in the game and creating the goal they needed to beat us," Coach Carmichael said. "This is definitely a tough one to lose but a good reminder to our team that on any day, any team can beat you."
With the loss, the Lady Bruins fall to 7-9 on the season and 2-1 in region play. Next up, the Bruins will return home as they welcome Toccoa Falls College to Greenville on Tuesday night.
