Lady Bruins Fall to Tigers 59-43 in 1st Loss of the Season

Box Score
The Lady Bruins suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon as the team fell to Voorhees College 59-43 in Denmark, South Carolina. "We couldn't seem to make a bucket," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "Still, we can win a game if we do the little things well like rebounding, defense and turnovers. We didn't do that today to come away with the win."

The Bruins entered the game with a 2-0 record after opening up the 2017-18 season with back to back wins last weekend over Hiwassee College and Kentucky Christian University. The Bruins were looking to keep up their winning ways as they took the court against the Tigers.

From the opening tip, the Bruins relied on the impressive shooting of Sydney Bedsaul as the junior guard made four three point shots in the 1st quarter. The Tigers remained neck and neck with the Bruins as neither team was able to pull away. As the first quarter came to a close, the Tigers held a 22-17 lead.

In the second quarter, the Bruins came out with an 8-1 run as they battled back to take the lead. Shooting woes began to plague the Bruins as open looked didn't fall. Still, the Bruins were able to take a slim 32-30 into halftime.

The Tigers came out strong in the third quarter as they went on an 8-0 run to retake the lead. The Bruins tried to recover, but the team continued to struggle to score as it took nearly five minutes into the 3rd quarter for the team to score a basket. In fact, the Bruins managed just one three-pointer in the quarter as they trailed 49-38 heading into the final quarter of play.

With just 10 minutes to mount a comeback, the Bruins came out looking to chip away at the Tigers lead. Turnovers hurt the Bruins as the team gave away several possessions to allow the Tigers to stretch their lead. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins had dropped their first loss of the season with a 59-43 defeat.

"We came out and played decent in the first half and controlled the tempo," Coach LeViere said. "In the second half we didn't shoot well and got out-rebounded. They are very athletic and we have to make sure we do the little things right or they are going to make us pay."

Sydney Bedsaul and Sarah Thomsen each had 14 points on the day to lead the team. The Tigers were able to win the rebounding margin 47-35 over BJU as the Bruins fall to 2-1 on the season. Next up, the Lady Bruins will be on the road Monday night as the team battles Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
