The Lady Bruins basketball team rounded out their three day competition at the Coaches vs. Cancer classic in Montgomery, Alabama. Despite a hard fought effort, the team fell to Huntingdon College 73-57 and falls to 3-4 on the season.
"They are a very good team," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "They have good guard play and a smart post player. We have lots of little things to improve on but lots of bright spots and things we did well."
Saturday's contest would be the third game in as many days for the Bruins as the team lost Thursday to LaGrange College before defeating Agnes Scott College on Friday. The Hawks of Huntingdon College came into the game at 2-0.
The Hawks stormed out to an early 8-2 lead behind good shooting from Alex Lowery. The Bruins offense was ice cold from the field as the team was 1-13 from the floor in the opening quarter. The team had open looks but shots refused to fall allowing the Hawks to gain extra offensive possessions. Despite the offensive struggles, the Bruins defense was strong as the Hawks led 12-3 at the end of the 1st quarter.
In the second quarter, the Hawks added to their lead with back to back to back three pointers to go up 18-3. At the midway point of the quarter, the Bruins began to find their groove offensively as Sarah Thomsen hit a three to cut into the lead. As the halftime buzzer sounded, the Bruins knew they had some ground to make up as they trailed 34-15 at the break.
Another 8-0 run to start the second half allowed the Hawks to regain a 20 point lead. The Bruins continued to battle as Madison Shupe hit back to back three point shots down the stretch as the Bruins trailed 60-27 at the end of three.
With the game out of reach, the Bruins looked to finish the game well and it showed as the team worked the ball around for open looks to score. Sydney Bedsaul was able to hit three-straight three point shots to spark an 11-0 run for the Bruins. Although the team had a better finish, their early deficit was too much to overcome as the team fell to Huntingdon College 73-57.
"We had three tough games in three days," Coach LeViere said. "It was a great trip for us and we can get some rest over the break and get ready for a very tough schedule after Thanksgiving."
Sha'Ron Brunson led the Bruins with 14 points and 6 rebounds while Sarah Thomsen scored 12 points and snagged 5 rebounds. The first half struggles hurt the team as they shot just 20% from the field in the first half and 30% for the game.
Next up, the Bruins will have a break in action before they take the court again in Spartanburg, South Carolina November 28 at Wofford College.
