Box Score
The Lady Bruins suffered a tough loss in their first home game of the season as they fell to the Brevard College Tornados 55-47. The Bruins fall to 4-8 on the season after the loss.
"The effort was there and we tried really hard but ultimately beat ourselves tonight," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "You saw us claw back into it because of our effort but we just didn't execute."
The first quarter saw both teams held to low scores as it took nearly three minutes to record the first points of the game. Sarah Thomsen made the first bucket for the Bruins as both teams remained locked at 5-5 for the majority of the quarter. The Tornadoes were able to break through with a 12-1 run to end the quarter with a 17-6 lead.
A pair of baskets by Kylee Leffew and Faith Hart cut the Tornados' lead down to seven at 17-10. Hart then made her lone three of the game to bring the Bruins within four at 17-13. Brevard College called a timeout to try to stop the Bruins' run from going any further. The timeout proved to be successful as the Tornados came out with back to back baskets to take another double digit lead. Following the Tornados' run, Amanda Bates made a layup and got fouled twice and making all four of her free throws to keep the Bruins within five at 23-18. As the half came to a close, the Bruins were able to make one final push as they trailed 25-22 at the break.
In the second half, the Bruins came out looking to take the lead. The third quarter mirrored the first quarter as both teams played great defense while both offenses struggled. With 3:15 left to play in the 3rd, both teams combined for a total of 10 points, two of those belonging to the Bruins. Hart was able to end the Bruins scoring drought and cut the Tornados' lead down to nine at 35-26. Julia Simmons sparked the Bruins off the bench as she scored to help the team trail 38-32 at the end of the third.
As the final quarter began, the Bruins came out with great defensive play as they scored on back to back turnovers by the Tornados as they trailed 42-39. Julia Simmons again came up big as she scored to straight baskets to give the Bruins a 43-42 lead. The Tornados came right back as they regained the lead from the foul line.
In the final moments of the game, the Bruins had several costly turnovers while the Tornadoes made their free throw attempts as they held on for a 55-47 win over BJU. You're not going to beat too many teams turning the ball over that many times," Coach LeViere said. "We are way more capable than what we showed tonight."
Sha'Ron Brunson led the Bruins with 14 points on the night while Julia Simmons finished with 10. The Bruins defense forced the Tornados to shoot just 5% from three point range and 32% from the field. Next up, the Bruins will be on the road for their final game of the first semester of play. The team will travel to Franklin Springs, Georgia, December 14 for a matchup with Emmanuel College.
