The Lady Bruins won in convincing fashion over region opponent Trinity Baptist College on Thursday night as they team defeated the Eagles 93-56. The story of the night was Bruins forward Amanda Bates who posted a new school record with 25 rebounds to go along with 20 points in the win. The team improves to 12-14 on the season.
"They are a pretty scrappy team," Bates said. "We knew if we boxed out and worked hard in rebounding we could use that to our advantage. Defensively I think we worked hard, we worked well, and we didn't give up."
The Bruins pushed hard late in the game and exploded for a 33-point 4th quarter to run away with the victory. The team played well defensively as they forced the Eagles into tough looks from the field.
Although Bates was a dominant factor for the Bruins on the night, it wasn't just a one woman show as Sarah Thomsen added 11 points and Sha'ron Brunson scored 16 and added 7 rebounds. The team hit 11 three-pointers, and were also 6-8 from the free-throw line.
The game was close in the opening minutes, but the Lady Bruins used an 8-0 run to close out the first quarter as Sydney Bedsaul and Hannah Tompkins each knocked down a three to help the team take a 21-13 at the end of the first. "We really took some bad shots early on, we settled, but once we started breaking down the zone and executing the plays we really did well." Bruins Coach Mike LeViere said.
In the second quarter, the Bruins continued to ride their hot shooting as they moved the ball around and penetrated the lane for points. Defensively, the team stood strong as they only allowed 9 points by the Eagles in the quarter. The Bruins took a 39-22 lead into the break after closing the second quarter strong as they did the first.
The Bruins came out charged up in the second half and picked up where they left off as they continued to stretch their lead. Even when the reserve players entered the game, the team continued to play at a high level.
With the game well in hand, the Bruins continued to make plays offensively while controlling the glass in rebounding. The Eagles tried to make the game respectable, but the Bruins answered each basket with multiple points of their own as they rolled to a 93-56 win.
"We continue to stress doing the little things right," Coach LeViere said. "We rebounded and defended well and also had a really good assist to turnover ration tonight. All of those things are just little things that add up over the course of the game were big for us tonight."
The Bruins dominated the rebounding margin as the team outrebounded the Eagles 64-20 in the game. Amanda Bates posted another double double on the season and set a new record with 25 rebounds in a single game. With the win, the Bruins move to 12-14 on the season and play their next game on Saturday afternoon in Florida against Pensacola Christian College.
