The Bob Jones University Bruins shooting sports teams competed well at the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships in Talladega, Alabama on Saturday.
"I'm extremely proud of our team and how they competed against programs that have been doing this a lot longer than we have," Bruins Shooting Sports Head Coach Mike Wilkie said. "As with anything, we compete for God's honor and glory and our students did that well in this tournament."
The Bruins were among eight different collegiate programs competing at the tournament. Among the programs were Texas A&M, Michigan State, Florida State, University of Vermont, John Brown University and West Point. Despite a strong field of competitors, the Bruins held their own as several won team and individual awards.
Freshman Tyler Moritsch placed 11th overall in the Men's Centerfire Pistol Collegiate Division while the team placed 7th of the 9 teams competing. On the women's side, Elizabeth Paris placed 4th and Priscilla Painter placed 5th overall in the Collegiate Rimfire Pistol Division as the team placed 2nd overall in that category.
"I'm very proud of how our team did," Bruins senior captain David Smith said. "We improved from last year and had great results with the other teams. We look forward to continuing to improve in the future."
The Bruins Shooting Sports teams continue to build momentum as they compete in their inaugural season of intercollegiate competition. The team was coming off a 1st place finish at the SASP Regional Match in February. The team will close out their season on April 29 as they compete in a Kentucky State Match in Wilmore, Kentucky.
