Bruins Finish Season with a Bang at SASP Kentucky Match

The Bob Jones University Bruins shooting sports teams finished up their first full season of intercollegiate competition at the Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation (SSSF) regional match in Wilmore, Kentucky on Saturday.

The teams finished well with several top performances on the day as both the women's team captured 1st place in the Rimfire Collegiate Open, edging Miami University of Ohio by just three points. The men's team also captured first in the Centerfire pistol category and several individual shooters ranked among the best at the tournament.

"I'm very proud of our team," Bruins Coach Mike Wilkie said. "In our first full year of competition we have been competitive and have had several first and second place finishes in our classifications. That's quite a long way from where we started and we are already looking forward to next year."

The duo of Elizabeth Paris and Priscilla Painter shot well in their Rimfire category as the pair scored a 405.84. Paris would finish 8th overall (77.54) while Painter finished 16th (88.30) in the tournament field.

On the men's side, the team of David Smith, Nathanael Siebert, Nathaniel Haefka and John Ferguson won the Centerfire Collegiate division with a score of 307.2. Haefka had the lowest time for the squad with a 61.58 score.

Overall, it was an exciting first season for the shooting sports teams. This year's team has left a great foundation for the seasons to come.

"I'm proud of our seniors who have led the way and established a little bit of athletics history for BJU," Coach Wilkie said. "Our young men and women get it that our team is competing for the glory of God. We hope we were able to plant seeds along the line that will produce fruit for the kingdom."

The Bruins shooting sports teams will head into the offseason with momentum as the team prepares for the 2017-18 season.
