Lady Bruins Sweep Wolves 3-0

Box Score

It had been over a week since the Lady Bruins last were on the court for a match, but it didn't show as the team easily defeated the Wesleyan College Wolves 3-0 on Thursday night in Greenville, South Carolina.

"It's been a long break," Bruins Head Coach Vickie Denny said. "We were ready to play and I'm glad that we were able to take this match in three. This is the beginning of a long stretch of games and we wanted to start strong and just get better as we continue to play."

In the first set, Erin Jarvis and Lauren Muckenschnabl scored immediately for the Bruins as the team jumped out to an early lead. The Wolves' play started sloppy and the team racked up three service errors very early on in the set. Several mishandles and miscommunications also hindered the Wolves' game and the Bruins took advantage to build a 15-8 lead. After a Wolves timeout, the Bruins were able to close out the set 25-15.

"I think we placed the ball pretty well" Bruins Captain Marjorie Elliott said. "We had some great passing and had a lot of players step up and play really well."

The Bruins entered the second set aiming to keep the game under their command. On the other side of the court, the Wolves were looking to find a way to respond to the Bruins level of play and clean up the mistakes on their end. Rachel Tubbs set the tone early with great offensive play to give BJU the lead. They built on their momentum as Saleena Walker served an ace to spark a run as the Bruins built a 17-5 lead. A kill by Tubbs, followed by aces from Gaston and Elliott gave the Bruins a lopsided win in the second set 25-5.

As the third set began, the Bruins looked to close out the Wolves to complete the sweep. Coach Denny went to her bench as the lineup included almost all freshman. "It's important to give them some playing time early on in the season so that we can give them that experience" Denny said. The Bruins started off the third set on a 4-0 run which included an ace by Muckenschnabl. Brittany Annand scored an ace as well as the Bruins soared to a 13-5 lead. Despite a small run, the Wolves were not able to dig out of the hole as the Bruins won the third set 25-12 and the match 3-0.

Laura Gaston led the team with 7 kills on the night while Saleena Walker finished the match with 6 aces. With this win, the Bruins improve to 3-4 on the season. The team will face off against Toccoa Falls College tomorrow in their first region match of the 2017 season. "I think my team can bring it" Coach Denny said. "It will be a great atmosphere and an exciting match. We'll see what we can do."
