Lady Bruins Bounce Back with 2-1 Win Over Bears

Box Score
The Lady Bruins soccer team got a big win by a slim margin as the team beat the buzzer to capture a 2-1 victory over Truett-McConnell on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

"Truett McConnell is a great team," Bruins Head Coach Chris Carmichael said. "It was a hard fought match today, they really gave us a great challenge."

The Bears came into the match at 6-2-1 and were in the midst of a 4-game winning streak. The Bruins were winners of two of their last three games, but were coming off a tough 5-0 loss on Tuesday to USC Upstate.

Throughout the first half BJU did a good job of maintaining possession and creating scoring opportunities. The Lady Bruins were able to draw first blood in the 8th minute as forward Mikayla Rajcan launched a shot from outside the 18, soaring over the opposing goalkeeper Ashley Walloch's outstretched hands.

The Bruins defense was able to stand strong against the Bears attack as they turned aside shots and opportunities. Going into halftime the Lady Bruins held a 1-0 lead over the Bears.

Momentum changed in the 2nd half as the Bears came out strong and started to win the battle of possession. They pushed the ball forward and began to test Lady Bruin defense. The Bears out shot the Bruins 17-6 throughout the entire match and 10 to 4 in the second half.

In the 56th minute, Bears' forward Megan McCall scored a goal that was very similar to Mikayla Rajcan's goal in the first half. McCall was outside of the 18 and fired a shot that went over goalkeeper Jessica Baun's outstretched arms.

With both teams even, the fans at Alumni Stadium knew this game would come down to the wire. In the 65th minute, Abby Davis broke free on the left side as she beat two Bears defenders near the end line. Davis fired a shot into the middle that deflected off the opposing goalkeeper Ashlynn Walloch. The ball landed right on Kristyn Rygh's foot and she was able to tap it in to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.

As the match was drawing to a close, the Bears went into all-out attack mode. Still, the Lady Bruin defense held strong. Goalkeeper Jessica Baun finished the game with 8 saves with five of them coming in the second half. With seconds remaining, the Bruins were called for a foul outside the box. On the ensuing free kick, the Bears scored but the goal was called off because time had expired as the Bruins held on for the 2-1 win.

"I am very proud of our team as they never gave up," said Coach Carmichael. "We did a great job of staying positive and executing our game-plan in this match to get the win."

With the win, the Bruins improve to 4-7 on the season. Next up, the team will be back in action on Friday night as they take on Toccoa Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia.
