The Lady Bruins opened the second half of the 2017-18 season on the road in Takoma Park, Maryland. The team struggled offensively as they fell to the Washington Adventist University Shock 74-55 on Thursday night.
"We played well but we just didn't convert on the offensive end," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "We were off in the 1st half as we didn't have any offensive rebounds and turned the ball over."
In the opening quarter, the Bruins struggled from the field but were kept in the game by Sydney Bedsaul as the junior guard knocked down several shots. The Bruins also converted from the free throw line as they trailed 19-15 to end the first quarter.
The second quarter presented more offensive struggles for the Bruins as the team shot just 23% from the field. A mid-quarter 7-0 run by the Shock allowed WAU to take a 38-25 lead into the break.
As the second half began, the Bruins made halftime adjustments and began to chip away at the lead. The team also battled on the boards as they had 8 offensive rebounds in the 3rd quarter alone. Still, the offensive struggles continued as the Bruins trailed 60-43 with just one quarter to play.
The Shock kept slowly increasing their lead eventually leading 71-51 in the 4th. Despite the effort, the Bruins couldn't maintain a consistent offensive tone as they fell 74-55.
"This is a good place for us to start at and improve," Coach LeViere said. "I'm really pleased overall with how we played to start the year and we'll get better from this."
Sydney Bedsaul led the Bruins with 14 points on the night while Sarah Thomsen finished with 12. The Bruins shot just 27% from the field for the game as the team falls to 4-9 on the season. Next up, the Bruins will continue their road trip on Saturday afternoon as they battle University of Valley Forge in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.
