Lady Bruins Soar Past Eagles 69-44 for Region Win

Box Score
The Lady Bruins picked up a dominant region win on Thursday night as the team defeated Toccoa Falls College 69-44 in Toccoa, Georgia. With the win, the Bruins improve to 13-14 on the season and 6-1 in region play.

"We're happy with this result but more important I was glad we played really well," Bruins Head Coach Mike LeViere said. "Our defense was solid and we shot the ball well when we needed to."

The Bruins came into the game on the heels of a tough home loss on Tuesday night to Johnson and Wales University. The Bruins and Eagles met earlier in the season with the Bruins taking a 75-41 win in the Davis Field House. The Bruins were ready for the first of two region road games for the week as the team took the court.

From the opening tip, the Bruins jumped out strong with the first baskets as they built an 8-3 lead. The Bruins defense forced the Eagles into turnovers which resulted in transition buckets for BJU on the offensive end. At the end of the first quarter, the Bruins let 18-7.

The Bruins pushed their lead to 21-7 behind a three-point shot to open the second quarter. But the Eagles weren't going to back down easily and responded with an 11-0 run at the midway point of the second quarter as the half came to a close with the Bruins leading just 31-27.

As the second half began, the Bruins spark was found from the bench as Kylee Leffew was a headache for the Eagles defense all game long. The sophomore finished with a near double-double scoring 18 points and snagging 9 rebounds in the game. She also played strong defensively with 4 steals. Thanks to Leffew's dominance and the team's solid shooting from the outside, the Bruins blew the game open with a 21-2 run in the third quarter to take a 58-32 lead into the fourth.

With the game out of reach, the Bruins continued to play well on both sides of the ball as the defense forced the Eagles into tough shots while the offense moved the ball effectively to gain open looks. As the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins had secured their 6th region victory with a 69-44 win.

Leffew led the charge for the team but the Bruins back court also was influential in the game as Sarah Thomsen finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds while Sha'Ron Brunson scored 12. The Bruins won the rebounding margin 44-39 while forcing the Eagles into 21 turnovers.

Next up, the Lady Bruins will be on the road Saturday afternoon for another tough region matchup. The team will battle for the top spot in the South region as the Bruins battle Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida.
