Matthews Finishes 3rd Overall as Bruins Placed 5th in Shortened JWU Spring Invitational

The rain canceled the final round of the Johnson & Wales University Spring Invitational on Tuesday as the Lady Bruins finished the tournament at 5th overall. Kate Matthews led the Bruins placing 3rd overall on the individual leaderboard.

"I was excited about this tournament for our women's team because I thought it was a course where they could score some personal best rounds and maybe even post a team scoring record," Bruins Head Women's Golf Coach Denny Scott said. "While the yardages on this course were more conducive for scoring opportunities for them, sadly, the challenging greens were a bit too much to overcome."

The Bruins came into the tournament on the heels of a 10th place finish at the Point University Skyhawk Invitational in Georgia last week. This week, the Bruins would be matched with four other programs in a smaller tournament field. The two-day tournament was played at Emerald Lake Golf Club in Matthews, North Carolina.

Weather would play a factor in the opening round as cold and windy conditions impacted scores. Kate Matthews recorded just two pars on the front nine as the Bruins tried to overcome the challenging course conditions.

After making the turn, the team continued to push through despite having to settle for several bogeys and double-bogeys. Matthews was able to record the lone birdie of the day for the team as she made a nice putt on 18 to finish out the round with a team-best 85. The Bruins finished the opening round with a team score 478 (Matthews - 85, Brown - 113, Snow - 120, Amburgey - 160). This placed the Bruins at 5th overall on the leaderboard.

The team was ready to battle back on the second day of the tournament, but rain throughout the night and forecasted for Tuesday play caused the remainder of the tournament to be canceled with the opening round totals serving as final scores. As a result, Kate Matthews finished 3rd overall among over thirty golfers in the field while the Bruins finished 5th as a team.

"We are seeing steady improvement from the women on the shots from the tee to the green, but we are just giving away too many shots on the greens and areas closely around them," Coach Scott said. "I wish they would have had the opportunity in round two to show improvement in these areas, but we know the weather is out of our control. We will regroup and continue to work toward accomplishing some of our goals as the season progresses."

Next up, the Bruins will compete in the Piedmont College Spring Invitational March 29 in Demorest, Georgia.
