The Bruins women's golf team opened the 2021 spring season this week as the team placed 10th overall at the Point University Skyhawk Invitational in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Kate Matthews led the Bruins placing 22nd overall in the individual leaderboard.
"It was great to start our season and finally return to a more normal competition schedule," Bruins Head Golf Coach Denny Scott said. "We had some rust on our golf swings after a long layoff from competition but the hard work these players put in the offseason is showing in their play."
The Bruins would be matched against a large tournament field with several notable NAIA and NCAA programs. The two-day tournament would be played at Callaway Gardens Golf Course in Pine Mountain, Georgia.
In the opening round of the tournament, Kate Matthews came out and recorded back to back birdies on holes three and four to begin the day. She then followed it up with another birdie on hole seven to gain some momentum heading into the final stretch of the round.
Elsewhere, Rachel Brown parred hole three while Elise Snow recorded a par on hole seventeen. The Bruins overcame a challenging course and continued to push strong to the end as the team finished with a day-one score 438 (Matthews - 81, Brown - 104, Snow - 115, Amburgey - 138).
On Tuesday, the Bruins came out looking to better their opening round total. Matthews again gave the team an early boost with four pars and a birdie on the front nine. Rachel Brown recorded two pars on the round including sinking a 13-foot putt fo par on the sixth hole.
The Bruins continued to persevere despite several challenging holes. Elise Snow recorded par on the sixteeth hole to give the team some momentum as each player showed improvement over the round to help the team finish with the same team score 438 (Matthews - 84, Snow - 107, Brown - 110, Amburgey - 137).
"While our overall team scores are not quite reaching our goals for this year, we are definitely seeing improvement," Coach Scott said. "I believe we are off to a solid start and should see some rapid progress in the coming weeks."
Next up, the Bruins will compete in the Johnson & Wales Spring Invitational March 15-16 in Matthews, North Carolina.
