Kate Matthews finished 2nd overall on the individual leaderboard as the Bruins women's golf team wrapped up the 2021 spring season competing in the Bruins Spring Golf Advance at Legacy Pines golf course in Greenville, South Carolina.
""It was great to be able to finish our Spring golf season at home," Bruins Head Coach Denny Scott said. "We had a beautiful day for this round and our girls were eager to finish the season strong and post some personal best scores. I had challenged them to set some individual and personal goals for this final event and felt we could achieve some of them at home on a course we are very familiar with."
The Bruins would host players from Johnson & Wales University and Columbia College in the tournament, although no team scores would be posted in the round. The tournament was originally scheduled for earlier in the season, but COVID-related issues caused teams to have to reschedule. As a result, the Bruins were the only program to field a full team for the day. The one-day tournament would match individuals against each other with nine golfers making up the tournament field.
Kate Matthews helped the team start strong as she recorded birdie on hole four after a beautiful approach shot which nearly fell for eagle. Matthews nearly made back to back birdies but her putt rolled just past on hole four forcing her to settle for par.
Rachel Brown added to the Bruins birdie mix as she recorded a birdie on the back nine to help give her a boost to close the round. Throughout the day, Brown came up with several great par saves on tough greens.
The Bruins were able to close out the round with some good shots as Matthews led the way posting an 82 while Rachel Brown finished with a 106, Elise Snow with a 117 and Rachel Amburgey a 126.As final scores were tallied, Matthews came up just short of winning the tournament as she finished 2nd overall just three strokes behind the tournament winner.
"We have had a good season in spite of many challenges, but we are still looking forward to better things in the future," Coach Scott said. "I believe we are on the right track and I would really like to thank Christine Heath who coached her last tournament as my assistant for the women's team. We couldn't have built the program up to where it is without her help. We still have a lot of work to do and she will be missed."
