Less than 24 hours after Friday's match concluded, a fatigued women's soccer team faced Meredith College for a 1 p.m. match where they fell 1-0 in the final 11 minutes.
"From the beginning it was obvious that the fatigue from yesterday's game took its toll and seemed to get worse as the game went on," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "This lead to too many technical mistakes which kept us from getting any meaningful rhythm of of play. Even though we didn't play our best, we also created several great goal scoring opportunities and their keeper made some unbelievable saves to keep them in today's match."
The Bruins started out the match with several good looks on goal, but then Avenging Angels then gained possession before played evened out for the two teams.Â
Coach Carmichael tried to combat fatigue and lack of starters by making several substitutions throughout the first half. After the conclusion of the first half, both teams went back on the field and started the second half still knotted at zero. The Bruins had several more looks in the second 45, but due to changes in the lineup plus fatigue "there were many times that there were strikers making runs that didn't connect."Â
With just over 11 minutes remaining in the match, Kaelin Sanderford sailed the ball from outside the box right into the Bruins net giving Meredith College the lead. The Bruins were unable to capitalize on any of their final attempts and ended the day with a 1-0 loss.
"I am proud that the players were able to put forth a physically intense effort, but we just came up short at the end."
Next up for the the team? "Some much needed rest and recovery," says Carmichael. The Bruins will be able to use the rest of the Labor Day weekend to rest before taking on Columbia International University at Alumni Stadium for their home opener Tuesday, September 7.
