The Bob Jones University women's basketball team made their way across town to take on NCAA DI Furman University in a Saturday exhibition. At the conclusion of the game, the Bruins saw themselves down 101-47 against the Paladins.
"I am super proud of our team and the way they competed," said Head Coach Mike LeViere. "With all our youth and inexperience we were understandably a little tentative, but we continue to learn and grow and there was significant improvement in the second half."
Today's game marked the fifth meeting between the two Greenville schools with the NCAA DI program taking the win in each meeting.Â
As today's exhibition got underway from Hayes Gym on the campus of North Greenville University, the Bruins saw themselves down by six points early before Kayley Trump made her way to the free throw line where she sank both shots to get the Bruins on the board. BJU notched 14 points in the first quarter as they trailed by 18 points after 10 minutes of play.Â
Furman put up 10 points in the second frame before Trump again got the Bruins on the board with a jumper. Trump put down two more points to record the only four points for Bob Jones in the second quarter.Â
After the halftime break, Caitlyn Dickerson began the scoring for BJU with a three-pointer followed by another one from outside the arc by Keely Price. The third quarter finished with the Bruins putting up 20 points, only six points less than the Paladins.Â
A jumper from Trump opened the final quarter of play. Anna Layne Wylder then posted back-to-back three-pointers to add to the Bruins total. At the final buzzer, it was Furman on top 101-44.Â
Kayley Trump and Jenna Brooks led the Bruins with 10 points each followed closely by Anna Layne Wylder with nine and Keely Price with eight.Â
"We figured out that we can compete and make plays even when we are over matched," said LeViere. "It was a positive experience, and we take away some lessons learned and get ready for the next challenge."
Following the Thanksgiving break, the Bruins are back in action for a home game against Wesleyan College on December 2 as they look to improve on the 3-5 season record.Â
