The Bruins faced Paine College in a Friday doubleheader from Augusta, Georgia. Henry Wallach pitched a complete game in game one as the Bruins fell 3-5 before Joshua Legnard took to the mound for all seven innings in the 12-4 victory in game two.
First pitch of today's NCCAA contest came at noon as the Lions kept the Bruins off the board in the top of the first inning. The Bruins looked to Henry Wallach on the mound in the bottom of the first.
After Paine College recorded a run in the first inning, Pablo Austin responded in the top of the second with a run for the Bruins to even the score.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Lions totaled four runs off of three hits to take back the lead. But once again, the Bruins responded in their next at bat. Chad Bayne recorded a two RBI single to put the Bruins within two runs of the Lions.
BJU battled through the next three innings, but it was Paine College who finished ahead 5-3 in game one of Friday's doubleheader. Henry Wallach threw 87 pitches through six innings played to earn the complete game.
After a short break, the Bruins and Lions were back on the field for game two of the day.
In a similar scenario to game one, the Bruins saw themselves behind 1-0 after the first inning.
But the Bruins came back with a strong third inning. A double by Riley Ramsey scored Zay Brandt to tie the game. With Ramsey and Evan Walker on the corners, Sam Gonzalez stepped up to the plate. Gonzalez singled sending Ramsey home as the Bruins took the 2-1 lead. With no outs and two runners on base, Kamden Lance looked to increase the Bruins advantage. His single scored Ramsey who raced across home plate. Next up in the batters box was J.C. Poe. Walker scored and Poe made it to first as Lance was put out at second base on a fielder's choice. As Stinson Draper came up to bat, he hit the ball towards the short stop and in a double play, the Lions ended the inning with the Bruins leading 4-1.
The Bruins increased their lead in the fourth with two more runs scored. They kept their foot on the gas as the fifth inning came around. Chad Bayne opened the inning with an RBI double increasing the Bruins lead to 7-1. BJU sent home four more runners to finish their time at the plate on top 11-1.
Paine College tried to work their way back into the game in the bottom of the fifth scoring three runs.
Sam Gonzalez scored once more for Bob Jones in the top of the seventh to put the Bruins ahead 12-4. Joshua Legnard closed out the game with eight strikeouts through seven innings pitched to secure the complete game victory.
Following the game, Head Coach Brent Casteel said, "Henry Wallach threw a great game in game one, and we were aggressive at the plate but we couldn't produce enough. Game two was a different story! Josh Legnard pitched a great game and the team produced 14 hits with 12 runs supporting Legnard's performance. The boys kept the throttle down all day!"
Weather permitting, the Bruins will be back on the field at noon on Saturday for game three of the series at Paine College.
