The Bob Jones University women's volleyball team picked up their first two wins of the season in back-to-back 3-0 wins against Trinity Baptist College and Trinity College of Florida from the NCAA South Region Kickoff in Jacksonville, Florida. With today's wins, the Bruins improve to 2-5 on the year.
"Today we stepped up as a team and played some solid volleyball," said Head Coach Vickie Denny. "We were able to get into a rhythm offensively and created some good defensive plays. We also started serving more aggressively and it paid off with some great serving runs."
The Bruins entered today's games looking to come up big against some familiar opponents. From TBC Eagles Gymnasium, the Bruins faced off against NCCAA South Region rival Trinity Baptist College. Today's game marked the tenth meeting between the two programs.
As today's contest against the Eagles got underway, the Bruins got off to a quick 8-0 advantage to start the game against. It was a dominant first set as the Bruins held the Eagles to just eight points to take the early 1-0 lead.
In set two, the Bruins got off to another hot start. The Eagles fought to pull within five points at 18-13, but the Bruins went on a 7-1 run to close out the second set.
Looking to finish out the game, Hannah Goodwin opened set three with a massive kill for BJU as they went up 4-0 early. The Eagles battled and looked to tie the game early, but a service error put the Bruins back ahead by two. The Bruins continued to pull away and put the third set away with a final score of 25-12.
With the 3-0 win over Trinity Baptist College, the Bruins now lead the all-time series 30 sets to zero over the Eagles.
At the conclusion of game one, the Bruins got on their bus and drove the short distance to Eagles View Academy where they prepared to face Trinity College of Florida. The two programs exchanged points early before Anne Lloyd served 14 serves in a row as the Bruins rocketed to a 17-3 lead. BJU didn't let off the gas as they wrapped up the first set with a convincing 25-5 decision.
Through the next two sets the Bruins continued to play well together and concluded day one of the tournament with another 3-0 win (25-5, 25-8, 25-10). This win over the Tigers was the 10th in program history as the Bruins won 30 of 30 sets played against Trinity College of Florida.
The Bruins look to use the momentum and rhythm from tonight as they face two more region rivals tomorrow. They take on Toccoa Falls College at 11 a.m. before facing Pensacola Christian College at 1:30 p.m.
