Box Score After 10 innings, the Bruins clawed out a big 10-9 win to open the series against the Alice Lloyd College Eagles in Johnson City, TN.
"The boys played a great game today," Head Coach Kyle Morrison said. "They jumped on Alice Lloyd early but we got complacent. This is where the growth can happen for us. Good teams put teams away inning by inning."
The first inning of this game did not have many thinking it would be a high-scoring game. The Bruins got out in order, and then Bruins' starting pitcher Mack Ritter only threw 10 pitches in the bottom of the first inning. The scoring started in the second inning, though, when Elijah Medrano hit a sacrifice fly scoring Cayden Kennedy. Sam Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. The Eagles were able to get one back in the bottom of the third inning to make it 2-1.
It was in the fourth inning when the Eagles jumped out ahead. They scored three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. The Bruins stayed focused, though, knowing they had time to get back into it. They scored a run in the sixth inning on a line drive RBI by Mac Carroll to make it 6-3.
The seventh inning was huge for the Bruins! Medrano and Gonzalez both got on base to start the inning before Zay Brandt laid down a sacrifice-bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Angelo Gomez was walked to load the bases. Kyle Prouse came to plate and hit in two runs to bring the Bruins back within one. Conley Burk followed with a single to load the bases again. After the Eagles got the second out of the inning, they were close to getting out of the inning with the lead still, but Cody Kirkpatrick and Mac Carroll had other plans. Kirkpatrick came up and hit a two RBI single to take the lead followed by Carroll hitting a 2 RBI double to extend the lead to 9-6! This big six run inning set the tone the rest of the way.Â
Even though the Eagles fought back to tie the game 9-9 in the bottom of the ninth, the Bruins continued to have strong at-bats. In the top of the tenth inning, Kyle Prouse hit the go-ahead single to give the Bruins the lead back. Gabe Swarms, who has cemented himself as a great closer, came in a shut down the Eagles, and the Bruins came away with a huge 10-9 victory to begin the series against the Eagles!
"The boys fought hard to capitalize on the free bases and some errors. The game became a dog fight and the the Lord gave us the ability to get it done," said Coach Morrison.
