The Bob Jones University Bruins picked up a win in game two of Saturday's doubleheader to split the day against Southeastern Baptist College. In game one, the Chargers overtook the Bruins in an 8-2 decision before the Bruins battled back to take a 5-4 win in game two. With today's results, the Bruins enter the final week of the regular season 10-25 on the year.
Following a close 12-10 loss on Friday evening, the Bruins were back at A.W. Watson field in Laurel, Mississippi.
As the game got underway, the Bruins were unable to get on the board leaving two stranded in the top of the opening inning. Southeastern Baptist got off to a hot start and tallied four first inning runs.
After an errant throw by the Charger's catcher, Jacob Highsmith was able to score and get the Bruins on the board in the top of the second inning.
The 4-1 lead for Southeastern Baptist held until the bottom of the sixth inning where the Chargers put together four more runs to take the 7-1 advantage.
In the top of the seventh inning, a sacrifice fly by Cody Kirkpatrick one final run to score for the Bruins as Bob Jones fell in an 8-2 result in game one of the day.
After a brief intermission, the two teams were back for the second game of the day.
Back-to-back walks by Mannix Crawford and Conley Burk got Bruins on base. An RBI double by Evan Johnson scored Crawford to put the Bruins up early. A chopper by Cayden Kennedy scored Burk to double the score for Bob Jones.
A solo home run by Burk opened the third inning. The Chargers responded with an RBI single to get on the board in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fifth the Bruins regained their three run lead was Max Lucien scored on a wild pitch.
Kirkpatrick opened the sixth inning with a single. After advancing to second and then third off of a bunt attempt and another single, the Bruins saw the bases loaded. Sam Gonzalez was hit by a pitch to score the fifth run for the Bruins.
The Bruins entered the final half of the final inning holding a 5-1 lead over the Chargers. Southeastern Baptist looked to rally and were able to tack on three more runs, but the Bruins ended the inning and took the win 5-4.
From the mound, Mack Ritter pitched a complete game in the first contest. In game two, Noah Weaver got the nod and he pitched four innings before Mac Carroll came in to relieve him.
The final week of the regular season kicks off next week with a Tuesday road game at Brevard College before the home finale against Carolina University next weekend.
