After leading the team for nine seasons, Vickie Denny has stepped down from her role as head volleyball coach to pursue other opportunities.
"It has been an honor to be able to return to my alma mater: starting, building, and leading this volleyball program," said Denny. "To be part of our volleyball family, filled with so many talented and remarkable Christian young women, has been my joy. So many are continuing to do great things for God and His kingdom. I have been blessed beyond anything I could have asked or thought."
Denny joined the Bruins in 2015 as the first head coach in program history. In the inaugural 2016 volleyball season, the Bruins finished 27-13 to claim their first ever NCCAA South Region Championship before making an appearance at the national tournament.
This past season, the Bruins posted a 30-12 season record as they went on to sweep the NCCAA DII South Region tournament and capture the region title over Pensacola Christian College. Prior to the post-season competition, Denny was named Region Coach of the Year for the fourth time in her Bruins career.
At the helm, the Bruins were 262-79 all time with Denny as coach since the beginning of the program. Throughout her time at Bob Jones University, she has amassed six NCCAA national championships, seven region championships, and four NCCAA South Region Coach of the Year awards.
On October 12, 2023, Denny reached a new career milestone as she recorded her 1,200
th career victory as the Bruins defeated Carolina University 3-1. With that win, she became just the sixth coach in collegiate women's volleyball history to reach the milestone.
Christa Schlichting has been appointed the interim head coach for the Bruins volleyball team. Schlichting joined the volleyball program in 2018 and since has worked alongside Denny as her assistant coach running practices and helping bring in recruits. In addition to coaching, she also works as the compliance coordinator and as the senior woman leader for the athletic department. In the summer, she leads the Bruins volleyball camps.
"It has been an absolute honor to coach with Vickie Denny," said Schlichting. "I can't thank her enough for her mentorship, leadership and, most of all, her friendship. Coach Denny has left an indelible mark on this program, touched countless lives, and brought joy to all who know and love Bruins volleyball. I will cherish the memories we have made, and look forward to the opportunity to carry on her legacy by using volleyball as a tool for ministry."
She continued saying, "I hope to echo her heart's desire by encouraging Christian young ladies to grow in the Lord, use volleyball as a platform for ministry, and pursue excellence in all things, which ultimately gives God the glory. Colossians 3:23."
