From Washington Light Infantry Field in Charleston, South Carolina, the Bob Jones University women's soccer team fell in a 3-0 decision to The Citadel Saturday afternoon.
"We knew going into today's match vs NCAA DI The Citadel that it was going to be a tough match, and for the first 45 minutes we not only held them to no goals, but were able to implement our style of play, and I am extremely proud of their efforts," said Head Coach Chris Carmichael. "It definitely was a game of many positives, and we greatly appreciate Coach Ciaran Traquair and his staff and players for giving us the opportunity to compete."
As today's match got underway, the Bulldogs wasted no time and tested the Bruins defense early. After 45 minutes of play, the Bruins and Bulldogs remained level despite The Citadel sending 11 shots towards the Bruins net.
Just minutes into the second half, the Bulldogs broke the deadlock striking three times in under ten minutes.Â
Despite battling until the final whistle, the Bruins were unable to generate shots on goal against a strong Citadel back line. Goalkeeper Margaret Cummings faced 26 shots and made eight saves as the Bruins fell to the Bulldogs. With today's 3-0 loss, the Bruins now sit at 1-2-5 on the season. Â
"The score didn't go our way, but our teamwork, possession, and defensive effort were strong throughout the entire match," said #18 Mady Pfaffenroth.Â
#6 Brooke Coursen said, "I was really proud of how much we held possession despite playing against a great team. We continued playing hard even when we were down."
Following the game, Coach Carmichael said, "we lost our focus for eight minutes, and they punished us with three goals, but I am extremely proud that the players regrouped and were able to finish the game strong. Margaret Cummings made some incredible stops and kept us in the game, and our defensive line was solid in their defending and build up play. We need to get some quick recovery as we play a top 10 NAIA team Monday. The challenges of these games will make us much better as we move forward. I am extremely blessed to have such an amazing team, and we are well positioned moving into our regional games coming up."
Up next, the Bruins travel to Pulaski, Tennessee to face a top NAIA University of Tennessee Southern program on Monday afternoon.
