After a lightning delay before each race, the Bruins still put up solid times at the Brevard XC Classic.
"The teams both did very well for the conditions we had to fight today," Trenton Goldsmith said. "Having a weather delay before each race really messed up the rhythm of the runners' warmup and even cut it short, but our team stayed calm and ran hard."
The men's race was supposed to begin at 4:30 p.m.. Due to lightning in the area, the starting gun didn't go off until 5:00. Joel Batres-Mena took the first spot for the Bruins today crossing the finish line with a time of 28:29. Judah Nash and James Baer came next both finishing sub-29 at 28:44 and 28:56. To close the top five for the Bruins was Daniel Kyle at 30:10 and Levi Gerbitz at 30:30. Luke VanDenBerghe ran strong today for the Bruins finishing at 31:05. Freshmen Jacob Doshier and Matthew Carver closed the efforts for the Bruins in the men's 8k at 31:31 and 32:37. The Bruins had a 10th place team finish out of 15 teams competing.
Lightning struck again at the end of the men's race which pushed the women's starting gun back to 6:10 p.m. The team only had 10 minutes after the weather delay to warm up in order to finish the race before the weather began again. Every Bruin finished under 23 minutes with Lauren Jones leading again with a 21:24 finish. Kristen Dodds came next at 21:51. Hannah Cohen and Liz Farley ran the majority of the race together and helped each other a lot. Cohen crossed the line at 22:21 with Farley not too far behind at 22:37. Cora Gagne and Lillian Strange closed out the race for the Bruins finishing at 22:44 and 22:56. The women's team also finished 10th overall out of 15.
"I'm really proud of how the team kept their mind on the race didn't tighten up," said Goldsmith. "We're going to be able to build on this race and really use it as the season progresses towards nationals at the end of the year."
The Bruins have a week off of racing before returning to the course at UNC Greensboro for the Spartan Classic on October 3.
