Misha Gray, a respected student-leader at Bob Jones University and captain of the Bruins track and field team, finished his collegiate running career by winning the national championship in the men's 400-meter hurdles, an event that meant so much to him.
"From the first day Misha got here he wanted to help raise the bar for this team — not just on the track, but in how we chase Christ," Head Coach Ken Roach said. "Today he got to clear every hurdle and crush the field for the national title. He gave all the glory to Jesus. His 400 meter hurdle title is truly for Christ, for the team and for him."
Gray came to compete at the national championships with one thing on his mind: winning. With his family in the crowd, he delivered a special performance, but it wasn't without a little drama. The race began and everyone got over the first hurdle like normal, but then some confusion took place just a few steps later when they realized the second set of hurdles wasn't there. One competitor stopped and Gray even shrugged in confusion, but he kept running. From that point on, Gray was all by himself in the front of the race and finished strong to come in first place. He beat out a strong kick by the second-place runner and won by two-tenths of a second with a time of 55.44 seconds.
After a brief meeting with the rules committee following the race to discuss the missing hurdle, they decided to confirm Gray as National Champion.
Mission accomplished: Misha Gray is the national champion in the men's 400 meter hurdles.
